Since I have enjoyed the best of 05 list immensely, I thought I would be a wee bit premature and do same thing for this year. I am will be making picks of the week for singles and albums and hopefully you guys will all do the same. Cheers to the new year AND use this board for albums and singles. It should be a fun ride.

For this week, my pick is the new Strokes record. The naysayers line is getting pretty long, but honestly I think that if you are a fan of the first record, to say that they are used up is a bit pretentious and premature. I think that these guys still have quite a bit left in them and frankly they could turn out to be this generation's version of The Cars, which isn't a bad thing if you ask me. It's a very catchy record, the five songs that I have heard and while I have to disagree that it's a huge departure, I will say it is some strengthening of their sound. It's a good record that I think will be a few lists at the end of the year.

Well, I can tell you that if The Church finally release their new album "Uninvited Like the Clouds" this year - there's my number one album of 2006, pretty much... :-)

But also looking forward to new albums by Devin Townsend, Gerling and Augie March - quite a few favourites to release albums pretty soon actually! Could be an exciting year in music!

Ah Tool.......I wonder what it's going to be like since the last couple of A Perfect Circle records have been awful. I am so curious if it's going to be very electronic or if they are going to go even further into weird psychedelic moods.

Only listened to that Strokes disc once, all the way through, a couple weeks back. Left me kind of flat but I know it’s been getting a lot of positive comments on the boards. Played parts of it since, without it doing much more, but I‘ll have to go back to it before I decide for sure on it.
The one I’m really looking forward to right now is the new Neko Case – Fox Confessor Brings the Flood in March, I believe.
Also the Islands debut, Return to the Sea, which I’m sure has leaked somewhere but which I haven’t heard; the new DFA1979 and the new Final Fantasy disc, which I believe is coming out in May.

Ah Tool.......I wonder what it's going to be like since the last couple of A Perfect Circle records have been awful. I am so curious if it's going to be very electronic or if they are going to go even further into weird psychedelic moods. How anyone could think any one of the three APC records are anything short of near immaculate sonic conceptions is beyond me. APC = purity, musical bliss, sonic excellence I mean, shiiiiiiit, some bands, despite how "popular" they may get, regardless of how "trendy", fuuuuck, some bands deserve respect despite these cringe-worthy side-effects. And A Perfect Circle is one such band, I'll be taking that opinion to the grave w/me.

I couldn't really get into the APC covers album, but I still love everything else.
I'm psyched for '06. Where 2005 was a year of dominance from new artists, sophomore releases, and some guys who have been around for a bit really outdoing themselves, 2006 looks like it's going to be a year for the big dogs to run everyone back off the porch and take shit back over.
I mean, take a look at Adam's list. There's a couple there I don't really dig, but for the most part, that is a fucking LIST of bands coming out with albums. Any word on if the Mouse has anything planned for '06?

I'm not as keen on the Strokes record as Luke is, but I do think it's damn good. Might grow on me more too.
Anyway, some 2006 releases I'm really looking forward to:
Red Hot Chili Peppers--Infamously slow album makers, but this one is supposed to be ready by the summer. Can't wait.
Wilco - Obligatory.
Golden Smog - This is such a casual project for most of the members that you can't really go into the year expecting anything from them, but word is they'll have something out in the spring. Should be fun if nothing else.
Loose Fur - Awesome.
The Pixies - Assuming its really going to happen. I haven't heard anything on this in quite a while. Anyone got any info?
Sonic Youth - Late in the year (hopefully). Supposedly will be called Sonic Life.
Robert Pollard - From a Compound Eye is coming out later this month. His first solo release since GBV's breakup (other than the stage talk disc that I didn't bother with). Mixed feelings about it. Hopefully glen can give me a good review of it before I splurge on it...
Neko Case - Her new one, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, comes out in March. I expect to be consumed by it for several months.
The Arcade Fire - Supposed to be out late in the year. This might be the single most exciting release of the year. Hopefully it won't be a let down.
Mission of Burma - Spring release.

Here's what I'm looking for:

Radiohead Wilco The Raconteurs Loose Fur Neko Case The Greenhornes The Arcade Fire Sonic Youth Blanche Bob Dylan (if it comes out, he's got tracks recorded)

Ooh, I forgot about Radiohead. That should be exciting if nothing else.
And the Racantours...I really don't know. My biggest problem with this is that it sounds like Jack White and Brendan Benson will be sharing songwriting/lead guitar/vocal duties and that is just ridiculous. The differential in talent between those guys in all 3 of those areas is massive, and therefore anything that Brendan Benson contributes is going to be crap compared to the Jack White stuff. But on the other hand, if it was all Jack White, then it would be pointless for him to do the project at all...I don't know, I'll probably check it out but I'm not optimisitic.

The new Neko Case is topping the list of CDs I'm excited about in '06... March 7.
Two new Costello albums coming out this year too, the first on Feb 28. Don't know if I'll end up picking up both of them, but I'm curious at the very least (Costello backed by a 52-piece German orchestra? Count me in!)
I was sort of disappointed by Beth Orton's last album, but I'm hearing good early buzz on her new one due out in February.
Hoping the new Young & Sexy disc is worthwhile too. And the new Belle and Sebastian.
