There may indeed be a differentiation between "jam rock" and "stoner rock" but it must be pointed out that "jam rock" is much more tolerable (re: enjoyable) when experienced under the influence of controlled substances, ESPECIALLY for non-musicians.
Says who? The last thing "musical" that I've done in the last 5 years is play around with Fruity Loops, but give me Sunn 0))) or Electric Wizard ANY DAY over fucking Phish.

Stoner Rock = Jam Band? I will agree that Stoner Rock likes to lay down it's licks and solo times with organs and what not (ie hello.....we're stoned!!!! Stop bogarting our vibe dude!), but I have to say that most don't have the goofy dippy attitude that jam bands do. For one thing, most jam bands like Blues Traveler, Phish, DMB, Moe., and what not are totally into that sort of vacant, we-didnt-live-in-the-sixties-but-wish-we-had sort of vibe to them. I'll take the Stoner Rock of Sunn O)))) for being totally heavy, which I'll laugh if anyone says that Phish is heavy, and totally somewhat dark. The only thing heavy about Phish is my lack of patience for them. As Neil would say from the Young Ones, "now that's heavy, man".

"Jam Band" ... "Stoner Rock" ... what's in a name? Probably depends on age, music 'upbringing', and maybe whatever's been ingested/snorted/smoked/or just plain being naturally dug. Back in the 70's or so there was the term "Acid Rock" which turned out too to be a pretty big umbrella as it could peg both Pink Floyd or Frigid Pink -- meaning just about any rock music that a primarly young person would listen to while fucked up. Hey, I wouldn't have called Hendrix's music "Stoner Rock" but after reading Mr. Cook's post I could certainly see where he's coming from, and yeah in that respect could also fit in the likes of The Dead, Phish, etc. Same as with the comment towards Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, I totally see reasoning there. It's just not the bands/acts that I would typify as such but then to those who imbide (or not) and trip on them.....
To be honest, I almost have trouble with a lot of the bands mentioned on the "Metal" board as being a bit farther past that description -- when I see that term I more go into thinking "Heavy Metal", ala Led Zeppelin, etc. I think bands flagged as "Metal" in these days are ones who've upped the notches a bit higher, are more abrasive in attack so to speak. It's like us from the 70's hearing the word 'rock' applied to Ricky Nelson or someone from the late 50's.

This is the wrong forum (kinda) but I would be cool to hear some "stoner rock" mix cds...I'd be curious to see what people come up with....Stoner rock has a stero-type of being music like Phish and the Grateful Dead, but there is so, so much more. Besides the Jimi I already listed, I got a few live CCR jam songs, some live Dead ("shakedown street" is awesome live), some wacky Kinks songs, some Beastie Boys instumentals, and more; all of which make for some good Stoner rock. Even a few hip hop songs would make for good stoner rock/rap; I'm thinking specificly of A Tribe Called Quest. In other words, you don't actually know what stoner rock actually is, do you?

I think it can be a number of different styles. I guess I don't know an actual definition for it, but I think that would be kind of silly anyway. So many things can fall under the umbrella of stoner rock....Do you not think Hendrix has stoner rock qualities? "Pass It On" from Live At Berkley sounds pretty stoner rock to me.

Hendrix isn't stoner rock, it's blues. Stoner rock is supposed to be visciously low end with power grooves. Often times I don't even know how weed factors into the equation, since it really doesn't fit the stereotypical creative output of someone on pot.
Without trying to get too technical, if it doesn't sound like Kyuss' "Gardenia" then it's not really stoner rock as is known. Kyuss basically invented the genre, so whatever they do, you can trust that to be a good representation.
Skvor and fredrum are clearly experts in the field if Electric Wizard, Sunn 0))) and Nebula are being brought up by them. Those four bands put together exemplify the sound. Doesn't get any more definitive.
I should point out that when you put true Stoner Rock together with Jam Rock, you get the Desert Sessions.

And I personally find Sunn 0))) to be unlistenable, and Electric Wizard borderline so. Doesn't mean it's "bad", just unlistenable.

Uh-oh. Genre nerds alert!
Soundgarden's "Limo Wreck" is often referred to as "the stoner song of choice". Does that mean it's a 'stoner rock' song? I'm confused. Is stoner rock fused with jam rock really encapsulated in the song "Shepherd's Pie"? Damn.
