I tear down on "song for a blue guitar." I will now.

Built to Spill are good. Not as good, and not as consistent, but they'll work over a MM fix. I agree with this I think. It's early days, but I've been listening to 7 BTS albums in rotation (including the Live album, which has way too much guitar noodling in places) and enjoying a lot. Excellent stuff though, especially Perfect From Now On and Keep It Like A Secret. Though the supposedly shambolic debut - Ultimate Alternative Wavers - is absolute genius in places.

They definitely have better moments that several bands that have been around for as long.

I love the Live album...it's hypnotic in places...of course I like guitar noodling too. I'm glad you like BTS though.

Basically Doug Martsch and J. Mascis are the only ones that noodle of hours and it doesn't annoy me. For the most part, I even find it pretty engaging.

The title of this thread is false advertising, judging by the new stuff I've heard. "Dashboard" sounds like a weak clone of Float On's B-side. There's also a live version of "Fire It Up" on Youtube that just sounds lame. Oh well, not too surprised.

I think there should be a law passed preventing artists I like from sobering up. Burn down the rehab clinics.
I've heard six tracks now (live versions), and only "People We Know" sounded remotely interesting. Could this really be the same man that wrote "Night on the Sun"? Marr brings nothing to the party either.

I just knew I'd find some RHP/Kozelek/Sun Kil Moon conversation on this board. Personally I prefer Kozelek's covers to the originals and my reason is simple as this: I just don't like Modest Mouse. I've tried. One o' these days maybe they'll strike a chord within me but until then I'm happy to just let Koz re-arrange them. That said, I do agree with JLLM...it's almost like Mark is lazy or has become uninspired lyrically to resort to making new music for Brock's lyrics. But it's not as if he's just grafted words to music he's already written. I'm convinced that the lyrics have inspired the music. It will be nice to see a new, all-original Sun Kil Moon album come out. I'm waiting to hear the new Koz live double CD (thanks glenn)...from what I've been told it's much better than his last limited-edition live disc. Sisy, if you're just now discovering Mark & Sun Kil Moon, do yourself a favour and check out the entire Red House Painters catalogue. Pure, unadulterated musical bliss throughtout that batch of records.

So what's your excuse for your absence, JLLM?!

I'm hearing "Dashboard" for the first time right now. I'll form an opinion later...I'll be all over the album when it comes out, but the last one was just "okay", so I'm not completely excited there.

I really grew to love "Dashboard", but the rest of the album is hit and miss. And when it misses, holy shit is it awful.

My reaction is generally positive - maybe 'cos I wasn't expecting much at all. It's more consistent than Good News and there's some nice songs on there - Little Motel, Parting of the Sensories, Spitting Venom being perhaps the standouts for me in a generally strong set.
It's all a bit too clean and professional perhaps, and Marr has brought a real mainstream competence to the guitar playing which doesn't sit easy if you're hoping for Dirty Fingernails II. But I accept we'll not have another LCW so this is okay.
