I left out The Bee Gees and 10CC because they weren't all that good, but feel free to write them in, if you have a dying need. The Hollies as well, since I've only just remembered a Manc connection there, and they were quite good.
The Verve are from just outside Manchester I believe, otherwise they would get my vote behind The Smiths.
Badly Drawn Boy is a solo act and Simply Red are fucking atrocious. Hopefully I haven't forgotten anyone else.

Hmmm, harder than I thought this would be ... I love about two and a half albums by Oasis, probably three or four from New Order, and one killer each from the Buzzcocks and Stone Roses ... but there's nobody here that I'm apeshit over for their entire career.
BTW, could you explain exactly how Manchester is more important musically than Memphis, London, or NYC? Or even Liverpool, for that matter? And if you say "because of the Smiths," I will hunt you down and force feed you an entire steak. Or something.

Bloody hell ... New Order. They're the first band I think of when someone says "Manchester" and Power, Corruption and Lies is the best album by any band on this list. And samples will agree with me about that.
Where is samps, anyway?

To me Joy Division is Manchester but maybe we should put Tony Wilson up there as well?

This is too easy. The Smiths. Even Noel Gallagher would vote for them...

The Bee Gees were more from the Isle Of Man and Sydney anyway....
The Smiths should win it but I'll give a vote for James as it's been a great band throughout their career.

Yeah, I read somewhere recently that Robin is in the process of moving back...
The Smiths probably will take it in the end. I cast a vote for James, too, but I was tempted to give one to The Chameleons. They definitely deserve an honourable mention here.

Since this won't affect anything anyway, I vote Elbow for "Powder Blue" alone. Better than any other song I've ever heard from those other bands.

Awesome, yet completely peculiar that Elbow get a vote. If I were voting for them however, it would be based on their track "New Born", which exceeds perfection on a thousand different levels.

And if you say "because of the Smiths," I will hunt you down and force feed you an entire steak. Or something. In fairness, this poll could have been positioned as the "most importnat musical city to Rileydog and JesusLooksLikeMe", but I thought I would extend it into a seemingly absurd sweeping generalization instead. It's actually not so much that Manchester was or is important or influential. It's just always struck me that there was a disproportionate volume of quality coming from inside its walls given its relatively modest stature when compared to larger international centres with larger populated talent pools to draw from. So not because The Smiths are from there. The Smiths are better than just about any band regardless of where they come from.

And I absolutely love that James have two votes. Not because it's surprising, but because in so many ways they truly are as good or better on any given day than anyone else on the list. Except The Smiths of course.
