Blaming Thunk for these: Lee Morgan Sidewinder & Search for the New LandI already have 2/5's of the first one but need the album proper, and the samples I've heard off of Search... sound killer. But when ya got sidemen like Wayne Shorter (Tenor Saxophone), Grant Green (Guitar), Herbie Hancock (Piano), Reggie Workman (Bass), Billy Higgins (Drums),,,,it's probably hard to sound bad! The title track goes off into near 16 minutes of jazz stew.... Riverside Rapid Eye MovementThis release snuck in on me without knowing; 3rd from the band came out in Oct. Epic opus'es seated in the front row of the Porcupine Tree arena of new-prog. Don & The Good Times Good Timeswell,,,,just because. That, and AMG gave it 3.5 *'s.... For library purposes ---- to settle moments of needing wanky country-tinged jam-rawk....could prob. sub some live Outlaws I suppose,,,, Keep eyeing this CD-Ep for a couple odd live track covers Need to finish out the slide from one fine era into the start of the following error.... (pls., no one go American Psycho on me for that comment but,,,,)

Ah, yes. Sidewinder: Lee Morgan's classic.......that I've never heard. I actually only have "Totem Pole", which is on that album. When you get it lemme know if it's a must have. Strangely enough, my want list consists of mostly jazz right now. The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady - Charles Mingus I'll probably get this one next. And then after those, I want to get the best Curtis Mayfield album there is. Some might argue Superfly as the best while other say Curtis is. What do you guys think? I saw that "Right On For The Darkness" is on Back To The World, a lesser rated album, so I don't know if I want that one even though that's the very song that has inspired me to put Curtis Mayfield on my want list. Thanks Don.

oh gawd,,,,docRoc sent me the best Fairpoint disc set..... Need to drag some of that out. I too have been curious of the Denny set.
Ok Mr. T --- I have to get my hands on more of the Morgan stuff so if you can hold tight a bit, I'll return some of the favor you showed me! After hearing the tune you sent me ("Totem Pole"), I realized I had the title song off Sidewinder on another Jazz compilation --- in fact it's on one of my favorite plays for sitting out on the balcony with a stogie and drink while the sun's setting. I had both those discs in my hand tonight but want to see if I can score them cheaper right now....
As far as Charles Mingus goes.....gawd I went off on him once I heard a few tunes. Saint is a good choice but if you're just starting off on him, I can't more highly recommend Mingus Ah Um or Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus as MUST listens.

Wow, Don, you've really got to get a copy of "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". That one's a prog rock essential. GOTTA HAVES: Amiina "Kurr" Sigur Ros has employed the services of these four women as a string quartet in their last couple of tours...I'm not sure but I think they are also the string quartet on the last couple of albums as well (not counting the new outtakes jobby). I watched the performance disc from "Heima" a few days ago and listened especially for the strings, just to see the extent to which they added to the overall sound. I was surprised. It's not so much that they "flesh out the overall sound" (Sigur Ros doesn't need that), but they do augment it and bring to it another dimension that works perfectly. From what I've heard of this, it's not so much "modern chamber music" as one might expect, but very much an ambient album. I was under the impression that they have another LP or EP out, but Amazon only lists this one. Most likely the other one is an import, but then again, it's not as if Amazon doesn't sell imports. Anyhoo, this one is perched very highly on my list...and it's a shame, but I still don't have this: Sigur Ros "Hvarf/Heim" A testament to my current dismal financial situation that I haven't had this one since this time last month. Amiina "Aminanima" Ah, I found the other release by these Icelandic gals. The name is different (one "i" instead of two) and that's what threw me. It IS an ep. So, kick it up to the top of the list just behind "Kurr". And then, from the "I gotta have it but it sho aint easy to get" files": Bongwater "Box of Bongwater" It will be a happy day when I can afford to spend over a hundred dollars for a box set. But this will be the one I get. I also would like the other Bongwater albums that are available, including: "The Power of Pussy" "The Big Sell Out" "Too Much Sleep" and the kicker: "Double Bummer" I want SO much....

JAC- Kurr is nice but ultimately a little bit of a letdown after the superb EP! That one really borrows a page out of the Sigur Ros-playbook- magical melodies courtesy of musical boxes and electrically enhanced glasses of water (!). The album is just more folksy with the ladies concentrating on playing nice little string quartet ditties that don't pack the same kind of punch. So get the EP first. Seeing them play supporting Sigur Ros 18 months back- I was astounded about their versatility.

"Anything But Love"
Thanks for the tips, maarts. I actually have a few songs from both releases DLed from Limewire and they all sound very good. They were with Sigur Ros when I saw them on the ( ) tour. Watching "Heima" I get the impression that SR might as well hire them full time and call themselves an 8 piece...

My Wish List is about a mile long. Right now, the main thing that I want is the new Throbbing Gristle DVD that was just made available for pre-order. Seeing Gen and Co scare the shit out of people is high on the list. Plus it has footage of their recent activities. Ah, it's going to be expensive since it's coming from England and the dollar doesn't stand up as well since the price is in Euros. I don't care though....it'll totally be fucking worth it. Then I will spend more money when the Coil DVD box set comes out as well.
Those fuckers are going to break me.
I love the acoustic versions of some Sigur Ros classics on that new disk. That guy can really fucking sing. Those guys can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned.
