I finid it amazing that a church, faced with so much sociological changes over the last twenty-five years would still claim to fall back to doctrines dating back to 1967, let alone social teachings going back to before 1891. No wonder they're treading water.
Shinobi- that pic was gold!

An anecdote:
So I am sitting on campus yesterday, trying to assertain just what some undergraduate's position is on Bertrand's Paradox (it's a doozy) and drinking a V8 smoothie (I really like those things) when in walks a kid wearing a shirt that read "Straight Pride" across the chest, with some equally ridiculous thing on the back. I don't know why that bothered me so much, but even now I am still thinking about it.
I have little doubt that the kid believed in earnest in the statement he was making (which is plausible, given how often my students bring up the fact that there isn't an "Office Of White American Affairs" on campus, or other crimes against the status quo). What I have found interesting in the past few years is how often conservatives, who have often bemoaned liberal "bleeding hearts" and victimized thinking, seem to have appropriated a page from the liberal playbook when it comes to defending their own stances. Wingos today seem to have no qualms in painting themselves as the victims, particularly when it comes to issues of religion in the public front. Take stratman's huge whine after the Schiavo finale. The idea that leftists are winning any kind of culture war is laughable, as there is no more war than there was yesterday. There is only Bill O'Reilly and Tom Delay and other assholes whining that "The folks" are being taken advantage of by evil liberal judges and the big evil liberal ACLU and liberal professors. What a crock.

Oh I get the feeling we're going make alot more of this then already is. All of my posts after the seond one were in response to someone else. I will not drop this now just because you say I should. I didn't insert myself into shit. I asked a goddamn question. Period. You have tuirned this into what it is now. I'll be damned if I'm going to let you walk away from it. I don't mind Doc getting invlved in anything on this board. I don't think he needed to be demeaning though. I don't think Someone needed to be demeaning either but I have no control over her. This can end now. We can both apologise and be on our way or we can get evil. It's up to you. Or I can giggle that you're so wound up over it, and leave it at that. I think I'll take that choice.

Sorry, riley. After putting my daughter to bed and cooling off a bit. I've realised how silly this is. Chrisfan won't apologise because she never does anything wrong and even if she, she probably phrase it in a way that I'd just tell her where to stick it. You guys have really reached new hieghts in hypocrisy today. I hope you're proud of yourselves. Not any of you will be upset but I'm going to leave the boards for few days. I was thinking about it anyway but today has convinced me. I'd tell say you should be ashamed of yoursleves but You wouldn't know what I was talking about. Later. I won't apologize, because I have yet to see what I have done wrong. You posted a topic for discussion. I discussed it. Suddenly, I'm evil or something. I've always been of the impression that this board was a place to discuss your opinions of current events. That is what I did. What is there to apologize for? But while we're on the topic of hypocrisy ... I don't think there is a better example of it than a bunch of people who whine and complain all the time that they're views aren't respected or listened to continuing for how long now to mock Stratman's comments about Terri Schiavo. So you didn't agree with him. Fine. The intelligent thing to do would be to either state why you don't agree, or ignore it. When you mock his comments in almost every post, you are begging other people to ignore your remarks and not take you seriously rather than actually making any change from your whining. You want respect? Try giving it.

I thought that T-shirt was kinda funny- couldn't it have been an ironically challenged view on the world there?
I am SOOOO glad that I don't live in a country where this stupid debate about conservatives vs liberals gets measured out in such detail. God, you Americans are spinners, aren't you? If my Kellogs Cornflakes don't taste good tomorrow it's probably a liberal plot to undermine a strongly conservative founded breakfast cereal...man, reading some of the posts here regarding this is almost Doonesburyan/Bloom Countyish.
Why do you guys spend so much time arguing about this? I really want to know. Why is the perception of the other group so important to bring home? Does it make you feel better or is it just a mask to hide your own failures and mistakes?

Honestly Maarten, I think that the whole liberal vs conservative thing is exaggerated greatly on this board, and in other places, primarily the media. The advent of 24 hour news channels has brought about a MUCH higher percentage of news analysis than in reporting actual news. If you look at the primetime line ups of all 3 cable news networks, they are exclusively news analysis rather than news. As a result, I think that current events get broken down in much the same way that a sporting event does. It's not enough to merely talk about each team's statistics. You have to create rivalries, etc in order to make it more captivating. I think that news events here have become the same way.
If you talk to the average American, I don't think that they really see themselves as either "right" or "left". Rather, they believe what they believe, and vote accordingly. I don't think that most people truly hate or even dislike the other side. They simply believe what they believe.

Someone, your point is completely lost on the fact that it takes two people to to have an argument, disucssion, or debate. So, if I was wrong in the disucssion, then so was DED. The fact that you took me to task but not DED shows that your issue is my exsistence, and not anything that I said ... which makes it quite boring, and a good reason to ignore it from here on out. ~so much for 2 people

And DED, you put a topic out there for discussion. I discussed it. Guess it's a good lesson for you in the fact that you can't control the discussion just because you put it out there. Certainly not: we know who's the CONTROL FREAK around here, huh, we know who wears the control pants

*rubs hands 2gether*
Got the board all to meself.... heh heh . . . my magnanimous offensensitivity musta run chrisfan off, who was logged on only moments ago, boy i'll bet she's fuming.
well chrisfan, yeah it was a mean thing to say, but tit for tat, eh ol gal -?
I mean, why isn't it that I have never, ever seen you so much as step down one millimeter from your high & mighty, holier than thou stance, not once, not even when you've clearly upset people -? I myself, who have clearly upset you for instance many times over, have actually apologized to you out of the kindness of my heart . . . I can't believe you, a fine upstanding Christian lady, would not be able to see through and over the base level of this "discussion" you were having with DED, and simply rise above that and apologize to him: NOT out of any consideration that either of you were right or wrong, but simply out of CONSIDERATION ITSELF.
That is why I made that remark, and I most certainly do not take it back.
Where the hell is your compassion -? Your feelings for others -? What's it gonna take to get that grinch 8-sizes-too-small heart of yours to expand into a larger size (since "God" sure ain't helped none)-?
Keep on goin' to church, then. Keep teachin them Sunday school kids. Keep sayin your prayers at night. I still think it's not enough compensation.
Can't you put down your pride for one instant? Can't you reach out to someone like DED and say "I'm sorry DED . . . we just got out of hand" --? Can't you EVER step down off that fucking pedestal of yours?
No wonder you're such an adamant Christian. If you didn't subscribe to a Forgiving God, you'd be fucked, huh
