Well, we've just past the halfway mark of this decade, and I was wondering what people thought were the biggest news stories during that time...what we've all lived through these past 5 years...the first of the 21st century... List 3, 5, 10, however many you think are deserving status in history as IMPORTANT events. I'll start with what I think are the obvious:
***Asian Tsunami...the sheer magnitude of the devestation wrought by the Tsunami puts it at the top of my list. ***September 11, 2001 WTC Attacks...Everything changed after that day. ***Hurricane Katrina's Aftermath...God help us. ***Iraq War & Capture of Saddam Hussein... ***London Terrorist Bombings... ***Pope John Paul II dies, New Pope Elected... ***Space Shuttle Discovery Explodes on Re-entry...

asain tsunami took more lives by a long stretch katrina most likely did more damage in dollar amounts (let alone wiping out an entire 'big' city)
but i'm pretty sure it's 9/11 for it's geopolitical reasons and the ultimate (in)stability of the planet
4&5 are responses to 9/11
and the last two are relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things

You can add Columbia to number 7. [edit] Oops, I think you meant 'Columbia' (Challenger of course being in the previous century, and Discovery is in tact).

The Madrid trainbombing in relation to the London bombing should be mentioned.
The delapidation of the Israel-Palestine peace process.

Rather, I had hoped that you would add to the list. NONE of it is "relatively significant in the GRAND scheme of things", I might add.

The Asian tsunami is an event of truly Biblical proportions. 500/1000 years from now, that's the one that I think will still merit retelling. 9/11, of course, is also of historical significance.
Adding to the stories that have already been mentioned:
continuing African AIDS epidemic rise of China and India as economic powers ratification of Kyoto Accord/ continuing global warming story Congolese civil war establishment of the euro Darfur crisis Sudanese peace deal 2000 Florida election overthrow of Taliban famine in Niger coup in Haiti London/Madrid/Istanbul/Saudi/Bali bombings
