And yeah, I've noticed that our tastes in music can be vastly different at times, but in certain ways, that would make this exchange all the more worthwhile. Admittedly, I can be close-minded about music sometimes (anytime I hear the drummer pound away on his double bass drums, for instance, is an instant cue for me turn the music off!)...

Cue taken, no worries there. I have some ideas already as to what you might enjoy. After listening to what you send me I'll have an even better idea. Don't worry about how long it may take you -- I'm a pretty big slacker myself so I perfectly understand. Looking forward to this, it should be interesting to say the least.

I have to say after having listened to A Perfect Circle's eMOTIVe tonight I am much, much more enamoured with the thing! It has some darn fine moment, is quite mellow, but i have nothing against that at all!

But if I was looking for a secondary / sideline release for the year, i am afraid it's a race between two albums released by the same band.

I literally can't pick it between the Church's Beside Yourself or their recently recorded accoustic set El Momento Descuidado.

Beside yourself is basically B - sides and unreleased tracks recorded around the Forget Yourself sessions, contains some amazing songs, namely the excellent Cantilever (which went off live!), Jazz and Crash / Ride.

The accoustic disc is more like a reworking of older songs, which completely changes arrangements, rhythms and plays with melodies and the feel of songs in unique ways, as well as having four new songs...

Both are absolutely stellar, and it's a neck and neck tie between them for me, at the moment anyways!

welcome back skvor, nice list there. With that sort of eclectic variety to your tastes, I would think you'd be open to appreciating the incredible, wondrous passion & emotiveness of Coheed & Cambria's In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3, which I consider the best album released in 2003. I still can't stop spinning that thing -- and I caught em live just a few weeks ago, to boot. An amazing, virtuoso piece of work, they are. Watch out for em. And don't make the mistake of writing them off as some worthless MTV-poppunk act; they are so much more than that, truly an incredible concept-band. I also saw ISIS live the other week . . . they put on a solid show. On tour they're selling advance copies of Panopticon on vinyl. I got mine . . . and it was marbled-peach coloured, I understand it is a limited edition. It has a different cover than the CD. What a great album it is.

ISIS vinyl?!? I'm so there....and thank you....it's super nice to see you guys as well. As far as Coheed, I still haven't had a chance to listen to them yet. I have an aquaintence that is working for them right now, so I should get my act together.

Oh man, they can be off-putting on a first-listen basis. But give em another try and soon they'll get under your skin. Or you might catch the virus instantly, if you have an ear for what they're doing musically. Pay particular attention to the first 3 tracks. They really kick the album off to an explosive start. The whole albums shines, it just takes repeat listens to soak it all in & appreciate it. At least, it did for me. Be sure to post your thoughts on C&C after you've given them a fair enough chance.


That eMOTIVe album, in the final analysis, is simply stunning. A work of focused beauty.

Yeah, my list is starting to look a lot more definitive, too. However, I'm not going to post a list yet - always seems to be one more 2004 opus I want to hear first. Like that Mark Seymour disc, for instance. Though it's unlikely I will hear that one before the year is out, since it's not available locally.
