Weird. I've always called it Hannukah. Or New Year's. Or Thanksgiving. Or Ramadan. Or Kwanzaa. Or who gives a fuck?

Trees Beat Family as Christmas Companion
More Germans could do without their family than their tree on Christmas, a poll found.
BERLIN (Dec. 22) - Some Germans would rather spend Christmas with a tree than with their families, a new poll shows.
The survey in Thursday's Focus weekly news magazine found 75 percent of Germans could not contemplate Christmas without their beloved "Tannenbaum," the traditional tree many cover lavishly with candles, lights and decorations.
But only 65 percent said spending time with relatives was also essential for a good Christmas.
Singing carols was the next most vital ingredient, with 57 percent saying they could not do without them, while 42 percent said Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without presents.
The modern tradition of the Christmas tree originated in Germany.
Three percent of the 1,014 people polled about attitudes to Christmas wanted to skip the whole thing.

because, it's Christmas. the word has a perfect ring to it. i mean, who doesn't want to be a part of CHRISTMAS? even evil killjoys want to be a part of christmas. which is why its the most heavily effing corporationist holiday in the universe.
i say, let the Chris's have their Tmas.

If that were the case then why would the retail industry be joining the 'ban' wagon of the word?

I think Phil's point is the real nitty gritty of the matter. They started out with the banning of the symbols, then onto banning of the word.
It is all pretty pathetic really.

Could you please name me one single store where any symbols or words have been banned?

Yeah well they actually were going to do that Rocky, they had their signs reading Holiday Trees, they had told their employees they couldn't say Merry Christmas and so on... something suddenly changed their minds....Ding Ding!! I guess the Christians threatened to boycott the stores that were doing this.

Who are "they?" I've yet to see this particular urban legend backed up with any substance. It seems like that entire "war on Christmas" was dreamed up entirely by the reactionary right. There's just no "there" there.
Personally, I'd be happy to get any sort of holiday greeting from sales associates and cashiers. All I've been getting is "have a nice day" ... and I always make sure to wish them a Happy Holidays!

I know someone who knows someone who was fired from Babbage's software for saying "Merry Christmas" to a customer on the phone who mentioned putting some video game he was buying under his tree. His Jewish co worker overheard it and complained for reasons unknown. The guy ended up getting fired. That's the only actual instance I have ever heard of of the sort of "War on Christmas" baloney happening in the real world.
