Your first link is dead... Thanks for providing the working link, though. I don't think either Letterman or O'Reilly accomplished much more with that exchange than perhaps a textbook example of palpable tension. O'Reilly is a loose-lipped jackass, but Letterman's obvious disdain for the man begged the question as to the actual reason O'Reilly was booked on the show in the first place. The whole "war on Christmas" thing was plain silly, but O'Reilly has a point about Sheehan's own loose-lipped comments. Is she being controlled by the left? Who cares. That was O'Reilly's only faux pas, IMO, making the statement that she is a puppet of the left. For that, he deserved some ribbing, but for Letterman to quip that "60 % of everything (he) says is crap" was a cheap shot and showed him to be a less than gracious host. I've never liked Bill O'Reilly, and I was disappointed with Letterman.

Fixed the link, JAC. The first link should take somewhere where people can read more about this.

Letterman was spot on and showed O'Reilly every bit as much respect as he deserved.
LETTERMAN: This fair and balanced...I don't think you represent an objective viewpoint.

Mostly through all of his career, Letterman has come across as "Everyman" -- I think his point on Sheehan was that she's a mother with a dead son from, in her eyes, an empty cause. Something that O'Reilly wouldn't even acknowledge because 'dammit we gotta focus on the backin' the Pres' and that's seemingly about where the thinking stops.

O'Reilly is a jackass, and I'm not going to deny that. But I HATE it when talk show hosts like Letterman (or Rosie O'Donnel several years ago) invite someone on the show with the expressed purpose of slamming them. If you think the guy is a jackass then do the right thing and just don't book him! Letterman obviously had the intent from the get go - which is why he stirred O'Reilly's "water" (I'm still convinced that was a pre-set gag since O'Reilly intentionally asked if the water was his). So just don't give the guy a soap box. Keeping him off the show would be the honorable way to tell the world what you think of him. For not doing that, I think Letterman is as much of an ass as O'Reilly.
Actually, he may be more of an ass. Agree with him or not, O'Reilly at least made an attempt to justify his beleifs. Letterman on the other hand blabbed on and on without offering a single basis for anything he was saying.

I think the chances are pretty good that O'Reilly's intentions were pretty similar if not exactly the same as Letterman's. I don't believe for one second O'Reilly was ambushed.

O'Reilly is a big boy, he can handle it.

A few weeks ago, I saw a CBC piece about Bill O' ... He was dissing some female canadian journalist about the refusal of Canada to get involved in the Irak war, threatening canadians with a U.S. economic boycott ... You could hear the jerk saying that France had suffered a 4 billion dollars lost because of american boycott and the same could easily happen to Canada ... Only problem is that at the moment Bill O' was shooting his mouth off, not only did trade between France and the U.S.A. had not regressed it had actualy went up ... ! !

My favorite part about O'Reily's France boycott was that people would actually buy French products so they could destroy them. They'd buy bottles of wine and then pour them out...that's really showing 'em!

That shows the average intelligence of the average O'Reilly apostle.

I think the chances are pretty good that O'Reilly's intentions were pretty similar if not exactly the same as Letterman's. I don't believe for one second O'Reilly was ambushed. I absolutely agree with you that both of them were in on it from the get go. Like I said, I think the whole drink thing was planned, and I don't think O'Reilly was caught off guard. I think he's made it a regular practice to pick "fights" with fellow-famewhores for the name of publicity. (yes George Clooney I'm looking directly at you) But let's be honest here ... when Letterman stoops to this, he's making himself just like O'Reilly. No one is disagreeing that O'Reilly is a jackass. But Letterman, by stooping to O'Reilly's tactics, is no different.

So Letterman was a jackass that one time while Bill O' is a jackass all the time !!
I can live with that ... !!
