Here is something Obama is going to have to deal with. In a recent pep rally he said that the lives of the 3,000 american soldiers who died in Iraq were WASTED. You know the Right-wing is gonna jump on this and try to turn it into his "YEEEE-HAW" (Howard Dean)... Now the question becomes how does Barrack handle this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6_vFcW9pZI&eurl=Obama has to be careful here. If he starts hemming and hawing over what he said, he's gonna look like John Kerry(when he called the troops stupid--and when he siad he voted for against it before he voted for it). So there are two ways for Obama to play this. He can appologize and say he made a mistake, then hope the whole thing is forgotten. Or he can just come out and say tht that is his OPINION and that alot of AMericans agree with Obama that these lives have been lost in vain. Ask anyone of the parents, children, brothers, sisters, husbands and wives of these folks if what we have accomplished in Iraq (absolutely nothing) was worth the loss of their loved one. I dont think you'll be getting too many who have seen enough accomplished in Iraq to merit the loss of even ONE American life. Whatever the case it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I can't tell what's lamer, the fact that you're talking to yourself or the fact that you think what Obama said is even worth mentioning.

I can't tell what's lamer, the fact that you're talking to yourself or the fact that you think what Obama said is even worth mentioning. I think more than anything this quote by Barack shows his inexperience/naiviete in campaigns of this magnitude. And I have to wonder how many other soundbites the right-wing Spin Machine can dig up from his past two years that can similarly hurt him with moderate voters. For instance, imagine that Obama DOES win the Democratic nomination, and then sometime next summer the Bush Admin makes a big deal out of bringing thousands of our troops home (no one knows of the exact timing that this is gonna happen, but believe me, it WILL happen--and it will be right in teh middle of the election season) At that point the media will be filled with all these feel good stories of family reunions and all that. Then the right-wing spin machine starts playing this Obama soundbite and asking the returning soldiers if they think their fellow soldiers lives were "Wasted". It's gonna make Obama look terrible. GOP will twist this and make Obama sound like he hates US soldiers or doesn't honor what they fight for.

Obama apologizes for saying troops' lives 'wasted' POSTED: 12:15 p.m. EST, February 13, 2007
NASHUA, New Hampshire (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is apologizing for saying the lives of the more than 3,000 U.S. troops killed in the Iraq war were "wasted."
During his first campaign trip this weekend, the Illinois senator told a crowd in Iowa: "We now have spent $400 billion and have seen over 3,000 lives of the bravest young Americans wasted." (Watch Obama announce his candidacy)
He immediately apologized on Sunday, saying the remark was "a slip of the tongue."
During an appearance Monday in Nashua, New Hampshire, he apologized again, telling reporters he meant to criticize the civilian leadership of the war, not those serving in the military.
"Even as I said it, I realized I had misspoken," Obama said. "It is not at all what I intended to say, and I would absolutely apologize if any (military families) felt that in some ways it had diminished the enormous courage and sacrifice that they'd shown."
Obama made his second visit to New Hampshire on Monday, following his speech Saturday announcing his candidacy in Illinois on Saturday and a visit to first-caucus state Iowa.

I doubt there were too many people who really didn't understand what he was trying to say, but I'm glad that he cleared it up quickly and eloquently before FoxNews got to him.

No, I think they'll be pouncing on issues with his record, and with things he may say during the course of the campaign. If they aren't making much of an uproar about it now, I can't imagine that all of a sudden they'd start talking about it in a year and a half.

I'm trying very very hard to understand how that sentence insulted our troops in any context whatsoever, but I just can't seem to fucking figure it out.

The Right WIng SPin machine went back to things Kerry said in the 1960s to use against him! The Right-wingers dont care about Obama right now because they think Hillary is going to get the nomination. Hillary knows how these fuckers work and that's why she's being so shifty and "conservative"in regards to what she reveals about her stance on Iraq. She's playing the game, and doing a great job of it. But if by some miracle Obama gets the nomination, the right-wing Spin Machine will use EVERYTHING in their power to SwiftBoat him and this quote about the lives of the soldiers be 'wasted' WILL be used against him.

I'm with you, but you know the RightWing SPin Machne spins things. I mean all you need is one returning Iraqi vet who lost his best friend in Iraq getting up and boo-hooing about Obama's comment and suddenly Barack is a "troop-hater". He did the smart thing and immediately appologized for the comment, saying he misspoke. And actually if he would have said 3,000 lives were LOST instead of WASTED no one would have even ever heard this soundbite. It was a strong word choice and may be construed as 'insensative' to the families of dead soldiers.

Is that so sure? Has Hilary really such a large chance to get that nomination? I'd like to hear how you come to that idea, PaulED.

I think the GOP would love it if Hilary got the nomination and yes, I think many expect her to. She's polling very high right now and has the most money. At the moment she is the front runner.
It's not fair to say they don't care about Obama though, they've really been digging on that guy...the problem is he actually seems to be clean. That's right, clean. He's admitted everything in his books and has a good response to EVERYTHING so far. It's not that they're not worried about Obama it's that they haven't figured out how to attack him yet.
