Unless (of course) you have an even better set of principles we should trade our Founding Father's for. In that case, I'm all ears.

This is silly, freedom of speech doesn't mean there are no consequences for saying dumb shit, it just means it's not illegal to say dumb shit. The court of public opinion is a bitch and isn't regulated by the constitution.

Thorns I agree, however, Skvor brings up a good point...He works for a company that company has shareholders. The simple truth is that if said company didn't think they'd be negatively effected they wouldn't give a shit. Make no mistake this has very little to do with free speech. Well put ded.

Indeed. If he's fired, it should be because he loses listeners and sponsors.
Bill Maher might have said it best. He said something to the effect that the civil rights movement must be in pretty good shape if they (Sharpton, Jackson) don't have anything more important to focus on.
As ignorant as his statements were, at least Imus was making a (lame) attempt at humor, which can't be said for the documented racist remarks both of them have made. And they're supposed to be reverands...

I don 't understand...some of you guys were outraged when Mel Gibson drunkenly made anti-Semitic remarks to a police officer who pulled him over. And yet you seem to think it's just fine for Imus to make remarks that were patently offensive to blacks ("nappy headed") AND women ("hos") and sweep them under the blanket of "Freedom of Speech"...Where was "Freedom of Speech" when Mel was being crucified for his words? At least he had the excuse of being intoxicated...Imus was stone cold sober.

...and I suppose one might say Imus is being crucified for his words right now...I don't see it that way. All he got was a 2 week suspension and a butt-load of free publicity for his moronic radio show (seeing as how ANY publicity is good publicity).

No doubt, it's a good point. And for the record: I wasn't outraged at Mel's anti-semitic outburst, and it's not because I sympathize with anti-semitism (heaven forbid), but because I can shrug that shit off as the drunken rant it was, and furthermore, I don't particularly feel inclined to hold that kind of thing against a person. Shit gets bottled up inside. Eventually the pressure builds. The top pops off. Big deal. Forgive and forget. But if you can't forget. . . then learn to forgive, I say.

That may actually be the key here: We all could learn to forgive more. Or at all, come to think of it. I see this "outrage" on behalf of those who want to see Imus axed as fundamentally anti - ethical, anti -moral, you can call it anti-Christian if you want, and I would agree, but in the end, its just anti - brotherhood. Forgiveness is the key, I think.
But whatever

It belies a hidden reserve of hostility toward one's fellow man, be they black or white.
I.e, I cannot get behind those black people who are pissed off at Imus. I could only support black people who forgave him and furthermore, didn't give a rat's ass what some white honkey with a radio show had to say about anything.

Also: I cannot get behind my fellow white homies who rally around in support of that portion of the black community who are outraged at Imus's dumb ass comments. I see that as, essentially, a weakness of character, kind of like brown nosing.
Well I hope you know what I'm tryin to say here...

Not really, but that's okay as I've really been trying to avoid knowing too much about this whole incident. I've only heard Imus talk a few times and he frankly just annoys me. Can't he just go to bad-word rehab like Kramer did, though?

I don't think racism or antisemitism are things to be forgotten about or forgiven in a our society these days. They are things to be faced and dealt with. These things are still a problem because we don't want to make a big fuss about it, because we want it to go away. It isn't going away. If you really want a brotherhood then you have to have society were these aren't pushed under the surface and left a chance to boil over. You face your own prejudices every morning and if you can't do that, what hope do "we" have?
