I don't know about who it's generally credited to, but I definately hear power chords in Link Wray's stuff.

I would agree w/ Ken Holzmann's statement-maybe it's one just he cited and doesn't so much agree w/-that the Beatles were peaking c. 66 and afterwards got lost in the whole Sargey Pepper/White Album self- indulgence thing. Tried too hard to be auteurs and got away from the great 'Paperback Writer'/'Ticket to Ride' stuff which still rocks today.

...with all the superlative press and fanatic fans, I think it would've been difficult NOT to believe some of the assessments and compliments....and then to reach for what they thought themselves capable of. 'Auteurs'? I dunno...but you had quite a few supremely talented groups of musicians influencing one another(Beach Boys, Mamas & Papas, Byrds, Clapton...)yes, often while 'under the influence'....but they were trading ideas back and forth, so to me, where the Beatles ended up, whether you wish to consider aspirations for some sort of 'sophistication' or not... to me they pretty much ended up where they were supposed to go...given the encompassing sorts of cross- pollinization at the time.

That pretty much sums it up. If the list had been alittle longer maybe McCartney could've written one for Mr. McManus.

Costello:
...and Paul called out the next tune: "All My Loving." I said, "Do you want me to take the harmony line the second time round?" And he said, "Yeah, give it a try." I'd only had thirty-five years to learn the part.
Can you imagine? THAT is way too cool a quote!
