I'm going to Lollapalooza!!! ;D
I'm only going on the first day. Which is fine cause Day One is a lot cooler than Day Two.
Day One (Camden, NJ)
Main Stage
Morrissey Sonic Youth PJ Harvey Modest Mouse Le Tigre Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Von Bondies
Second Stage
Broken Social Scene The Walkmen Wolf Eyes Danger Mouse Datsuns Sparta
Solar Stage
Mike Watt The Dresden Dolls Bumblebeez 81 Carina Round The Living Things Peretz and Alex Graham
I couldn't go to the one in NY where the Pixies are playing (I'm going with my friend Krysten, and she couldn't make that one since she has work), but it's still gonna be great.
And sorry, thorn, no NiN.

That main stage looks amazing PC, but you need to check out Broken Social Scene if you can as well. Brilliant band.

Alright it's two days later, but here's a brief review of Thrusday's Slayer concert that Shane and I attended.
Opener was Damage Plan, featuring Vinnie and Dimebag from Pantera. Lead singer growls like Phil, and the material isn't entirely different. Dimebag still rules, but he looks like he's put on a couple pounds. A fairly standard, yet legitimate and credibly heavy set. They decided to close with "Walk" from the Pantera files and I lost my shit. Too cool.
Then the boys came out. I've been listening to Slayer since 1983, when I was 12 years old and Show No Mercy was first released, so this gig was 20 years in the making for the Dog.
There's a cheese and pageantry factor in just about all things heavy metal which people either get or they don’t, but some bands embrace and work around it better than others. Sing about death and Satan, but don't take yourself too seriously being the credo really. Slayer might pull this off better than just about all of them. They're 40 years plus now and they don't look nearly as ridiculous as say Aerosmith, because they've never compromised anything. They were guys who liked playing really aggressive, loud, and frantic music 20 years ago and they still do. They don’t write ballads for soundtracks. They just play heavy metal better than most. Keep it simple.
They opened with "Disciple" from God Hates Us All, and the pace and tone were set for the evening. I was surprised that they played three songs from Hell Awaits. I'll drop the set list below, but the highlight was playing Reign In Blood in its entirety to finish the show. Fucking perfect. I'm sure there were a few kids who wondered who the old guy was who knew all the words. Craziest pit I’ve ever seen. One big teenager soup that looked like it could boil over any minute
Kerry and Jeff play the riffs with the same ease that Clapton would play Layla after so many years. Razor sharp precision that "heavy" bands today are simply not capable of. Heavy bands today tune down, make it sound like sludge and call it heavy. Slayer actually know how to play. The sharpness accentuates the brutality of the material and push the shock element rather than forcing it. Sure every solo sounds pretty much the same, but each one fits the feel and vibe of the song.
As for Lombardo on drums, to no surprise, he drives the fury completely and masterfully. We joked about hoping for a drum solo then remembered the main drum line of every song is really a drum solo. The stops and starts couldn't be more spot on, and the double bass cuts just left me shaking my head in awe. Best drummer in metal. Perhaps of all time.
We screamed, we head banged, we fist pumped and left completely satisfied that we had helped opened the gates for a few demons and princes of darkness to make their way into downtown Halifax. All good live bands offer something different that fits their musical philosophy in a live setting and still caters to the folks who buy tickets. When you go to see Radiohead show you have a good idea what the set will feel like. I got exactly what I wanted from a Slayer show, and it was about time.
Set list (in close order)
Disciple War Ensemble At Dawn They Sleep Stain Of Mind South Of Heaven Hell Awaits Mandatory Suicide Payback Dead Skin Mask Praise Of Death Spill The Blood Angel Of Death Piece By Piece Necrophobic Altar Of Sacrifice Jesus Saves Criminally Insane Reborn Epidemic Post Mortem Raining Blood

Holy shit, since when did Lollapalooza get such a fine lineup?? I can't believe I'm saying this but that looks amazing. And punkchick, I cannot believe that Wolf Eyes are playing Lollapalooza - that is one of the most insane bands I have ever seen. They basiclaly deliver a wall of pounding, unrelenting noise nonstop that makes you feel like your head is going to explode, and there is so much weird distortion and equipment that all the instrument are fed through that it is completely impossible to discern what instruments are even making what noises. The crowd at Lollapalooza won't be as fun as the crowd I saw 'em with, I guess, because the Lollapalooza folks will mostly have no idea who they are, whereas this crowd was like die-hard Wolf Eyes fanatics who had all these crazy gestures they kept making in unison and shit. Still, while I would never just sit around listening to Wolf Eyes in my spare time at home, they made for an amazing, brutal, memorable live experience. Not sure how that will translate from a tiny dive bar to a big outdoor stage, but I still recommend checking 'em out if at all possible...
And Riley, great Slayer review! Damn, going to see Slayer with Riley and Shane, now that would be something. I doubt I'll ever see Slayer live, but I did get to see Dave Lombardo blow my fucking mind on the drums with Fantomas, that man is fucking psycho.
NP: Sly and the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On (song: (You Caught Me) Smilin')
Cheers, M

Yeah Mary (and Doc). I think Lombardo would be amazing even if he was drumming for Blink 182. Come to think of it, maybe that's what those losers need. I need to believe that he would make eventhe worst bands good. The Wallflowers? Okay maybe that's too far.

Yeah, Lollapalooza is going to be awesome. I went last year, and it was fun, but this year's line-up is killer. It's two months away, so I don't know exactly who's going on when (and I'm not missing PJ Harvey for anything), but I'll keep those recommendations in mind.

I've got to find me a crew to go to Dallas with for Lollapalooza, and that's not going to be easy. Wish to God I could go with my girlfriend, but she'll be just starting up teaching next semester, so there's no way. I CAN'T miss this line-up.

;D That rocks Riley! Hell yeah, sweet. You lucky dawgs. Slayer came thru here a coupla months ago, and I couldn't see the show, for lack of funds at the time. I'm glad you & Shaner got to see em for me -- that really kicks ass. No one does it like Slayer -- those lead guitar solos are like razorwire on a bandsaw, slice you up. Cool.

I already apologized once for the size of the pictures. If I knew how to do it of course I would. Took them into Photoshop and Picture Viewer, changed their size, but somehow ImageTown.net still sees them as huge. Excuse me for ruining your online experience.
