A very smart way to handle it IMO...offset the commute with enough of a nice house, a nice piece of land(which BOY did you ever get!)and preferably a bit of solitude...
...at the 'acceptable' price...
We've got friends who moved back across the state from a sort farming community on the Misssissippi river(the 'Quad Cities' on ther Iowa border)to a newer development which is probably 35-40 miles southwest of us...but into a gorgeous 4 bedroom palace (to my estimation), with a 1 and a ¼ acre lot, which they bought for $460K...which within 10 miles of Chicago's borders in any direction would have to be a million dollar house.
I'd had friends who'd moved WAY out in that direction years ago, usually for 'safety issues', for better housing values and for the 'better' schools for their school-age kids....and then I'd see these formerly VERY good friends of mine, oh, like once a year cause I considered the to be living in Bumfuck Egypt and too far away to go out there, enjoy myself and then take 45 minutes to (often drunkenly..hey what can I say?)navigate my way back home.
I always told myself that their commutes to work in the city were an insane price to pay....but now, seeing the type of house these people got...and the fact that these days my 'enjoyment' isn't necessarily predicated on getting fucked up anymore.
Oh. And then the fact that I'm honestly not too greatly enamored of our Matas necessarily going to an extremely 'diverse' and overcrowded, underfunded grammar school in what, 4 years and(as of February 4th)5 months...?
Did I say taht these friends' house has a pass-through fireplace on the first floor AND a fireplace in the(right now unimproved, raw)basement...
....*drool*...
