M -- would you believe that the amazing episode of Homicide that you saw (where the guy's trapped by that train, knowing he's going to die), was from the show's latter years, when it actually had slipped a notch? Homicide was simply the best "straight" drama I've ever seen. There's a DVD set of the first season, which I don't own but will recommend sight unseen to anyone who loves great television. I've got no idea what the extras on that set are like, but I can vouch for the quality of the main course.
samples -- Go the PhD route. It's more flexible, as M noted there's lots more funding available, and it has a lot more prestige. Seriously, you can impress friends, family members, and strangers on the street for at least the next five years just by telling 'em "I'm working on my PhD right now." Now after seven years they'll start asking when the hell you're going to FINISH said PhD, and stop asking them all for money, but for the first five years or so you're golden!
Or you could just go to law school. Three years later you've got a Juris Doctor degree on the mantle. Not good for teaching art history, but it does have some benefits. ;-)

Kinda fell out of "fantasy mode" after that and never got around to the next few installments in the series. However, I did turn my wife onto them and she has read all but the last (which I think is called Naked Empire). She doesn't read all that much, so it's a testimony to how good they are that she's so deep into the series. Now Playing: Warren Zevon The Wind

Thanks Jac. good to hear that the series sounds good for the future books ill be reading in the coming weeks/months. They are well written books with strong character development and a juicy plot. It's hard to get bored, even with the large size of the books.
I'd reccomend the first two to anyone looking to a different fantasy series: Wizards First Rule and Stone Of Tears.

Ha! Mary has me seriously thinking about a PhD program -- now I just have to decide what exactly to get a PhD in. Philosophy has me charmed, but I'm sure my parents will buck at the thought of such a "useless" course of study.
Anyway, I don't want to clutter up the book booth with talk of PhD programs. Maybe I should make my own board again so anybody who doesn't want to read my trash doesn't have to. ...NAHHHH. Make them suffer.

NP: The Hurting, Tears For Fears, listened to solely for "Mad World"

Why don't you study literature, you might like that.

Well it would certainly put an decisive end to my pot-smoking days. I cannot read when I'm a stoner. I guess any intensive study would require a cessation of marijuana toking.
Yeah, literature would be cool I guess. Not as cool as philosophy, but you can't always get what you want.

if your mother went crazy, are you sure you want to be heeding her advice on what to study or not?

I want to go to grad school, but not for a Ph.D. Just a Master's. In Communications or Media Studies or something. I always change my mind about exactly what I want to do (right now it's copy editing), but definitely something related to culture or the media. But I just finished my sophomore year of college, so I still have a few years to figure it all out.

My mum went crazy in a weird way. I think it just resulted from suppressing/denying too much really bad shit, and she vents it in dysfunctional ways. Maybe not "insane" but certainly dysfunctional. Dysfunctional or not, she still has a giant hold on me -- I feel a lot of guilt over her but yes, I'm working through that. Trying not to let her rule my life like she always has. For one thing, I moved to Colorado Springs to get away. I changed my Bachelors major from Nursing to a liberal arts degree even when she vehemently opposed it. And I'm considering a PhD/Masters in things I know she won't approve of. Just have to remind myself that it's MY life, and MY responsibility, MY choices. I choose my own path and will not let guilt choose the way for me. The extremely sad thing is, even though I've moved away and tried out independence, I am rapidly approaching "broke" without a job. Mum's pushing for me to come back and live with them. Aaaah!! I feel a bit trapped. Nobody will give me a job here -- don't know whether to move somewhere else (which will cost more money) or start standing on street corners. Bleh! Thank those of you who read that pile of blah for listening.

Oh, shut up, samples, that was interesting, why do you think there was so much response?
I'm going to grad school soon as I graduate next spring. Problem is that my GPA is going to SHIT, and I may need to take some remedial courses, which will SUCK. Problem is that I got all my classes for my major (Public Relations) and any other stuff I'm good at (English, philosophy, etc.) done with earlier on, and my GPA was high. Now, though, I'm stuck with all these goddamned hard sciences and bullshit classes that don't require ANY writing at all, just stupid fucking multiple choice tests that I'm TERRIBLE at. Since I flunked Biology this past fall (first F I've ever gotten), my GPA has made a disgusting nose-dive, from something like a 3.4 all the way down to, after this semester, maybe a 2.4. All this bullshit economics and science stuff is KILLING me, and I've got a whole year of almost nothing but that! My strength is writing (never below an A on a paper EVER, and never started on a paper more than two days before it was due), but all these classes I have now are straight multiple choice tests. I'm fucking doomed. Even the easiest, most bullshit class (visual arts 100, for instance) is a C for me because I have to do those goddamn multiple choice tests and can't make up for it with a paper. It's sick.
Although I AM pretty good at standardized-type tests for some reason, but mostly because that stuff is application, and not solid choices. Except in math, I suck there no matter what...
