For more detailed movie discussions, check out Weeping's Movie Board, but while you're here at the Lounge you might as well recommend a DVD or movie to me and anyone else who might pop in... This is where I'll do my 50 Cent Movie Reviews and any other film & television critique, so don't let me get lonely...drop by now and then, and be sure and tell me what you thought of the last movie you watched!!!

In MemoriumRest In Peace, TONY RANDALL. Feb. 26, 1920-May 17, 2004Tony Randall was best remembered for his role on television's The Odd Couple as the impeccably proper Felix Unger, but I think my favourite role of his was as Rock Hunter in the hilarious Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?. If you haven't seen this rollicking parody of Hollywood screen idols you really need to seek it out. He was from Oklahoma, born in Tulsa, and we Okies were very proud of him. His appearances on David Letterman's show were always entertaining and he was one of the most cultured gentlemen in all of show business, supporting and promoting the arts throughout his career. Tony Randall, 84, died in his sleep due to complications from a long illness, on Monday, May 17, 2004. For a thorough look at his life and career, check out this link: www.museum.tv/archives/etv/R/htmlR/randalltony/randalltony.htm

Nice memorium of Randall there, JAC.
Yeah I did actually become saddened upon hearing of his demise. What an amazing talent, and amazing man. He will be missed like few others.
I'll be back around here to try & spice things up, and make DVD rental suggestions.
R.I.P. Tony Randall

The Doom Generation. Sick, abysmally funny. The rednecks in the ending really make me homesick for Kansas.
Been watching some really sick films this weekend. Dead Alive? Oh my god. I just don't know what to say. It's a toss-up between laughing and puking.

Got one for ya, JAC. I just discovered its very existance over last weekend, at a friend's house. It appears the BBC has a lavish production of Mervyn Peake's acclaimed gothic-fantasy novel Titus Groan (1st volume of his "Gormenghast Trilogy"). I read the first book years ago, and loved every dark, twisted and poetic word of it. The BBC production was a series in 4 parts, amounting to 4 hours long (from what I understand). We watched the first 3 episodes, and are set to watch the remaining one either tonight or tomorrow. Let me say that so far, it is a spellbinding, raucus sort of delight. The characters were perfectly cast, including the legendary Christopher Lee as Flay, guardian to the 76th Earl of Groan, who is portrayed vividly by Ian Richardson, who captures the disintegration and madness of the earl in a wickedly funny performance. The young John Rhys-Meyers plays the role of the crafty & ruthless Steerpike to the hilt -- the centrepiece of this castle drama wherein society's various levels are lampooned in the depiction of a crumbling aristocracy due to be inherited by the violet-eyed Titus, just born in episode 1. [ synopsis below -click hyperlink] All 4 episodes are available on 1 DVD, entitled simply "GORMENGHAST". Rent it -- I think you'll be glad you did. synopsiswww.pbs.org/wgbh/gormenghast/film/synopsis.html

Thorn...that last post was made on May 25 and here it is June 16 and I'm just now seeing it. I don't know how I could have missed it when you first posted it and I'm sorry for being so late in my response... Anyhoo, I really liked Mervyn Peake's Titus Groan, though I have not read the other 2 volumes of the Gormenghast trilogy. I remember seeing bits and pieces of the British adaptation you're speaking of when I had BBCAmerica on the satellite a few years ago. Indeed, it did look like a classy, well-done production and I'd love to see the whole thing on DVD. I watched Eight Legged Freaks with my son yesterday. Bryan is very arachnophobic, so he got a few good scares out of it. I thought it was so-so. Mildly amusing. Not as funny as I hoped it would be, but I like David Arquette, so there you go...

[glow=brown,2,300]Anyhoo, I really liked Mervyn Peake's Titus Groan, though I have not read the other 2 volumes of the Gormenghast trilogy. [/glow] I've had the very same experience. AFter watching the BBC production of Titus Groan, it makes me want to jump back into the trilogy and take up reading volumes II and III. I've been quite sparse around here lately, too (so no worries). That's the beauty of this forum -- there's no real pressure for deadlines on replies and such. Hope your summer has gotten off to a great start, JACkory!

Marlon Brando...April 3, 1924-July 1, 2004We lost one of the greatest actors of the 20th century last Thursday, without a doubt. His roles in The Wild One, A Sreetcar Named Desire, The Godfather, and Apacolypse Now will live on in perpetuity as models of "how it's done".

The last couple of movies I watched: Jeepers Creepers 2I rented this because the first installment scared the crap out of my wife. Not many movies can do that to her (none scare me that way), and I've been teasing her ever since this came out that I was going to make her watch it. She certainly didn't want to. But there was nothing else in the store I felt like watching, so I went ahead and got it. It gave her 4 good scares ("good scares" judged by how they made her jump...he he he), but overall it just was not as effective as the original. Call me a prude, but the excessive gratuitous profanity really detracted from the impact of the film. One notices that "these kids really cuss a lot" more than the stuff that's supposed to be scaring ya... Bubba Ho-TepHad this movie recommended to me by a friend, and though the premise is undeniably cool (Elvis in a retirement home with a black guy who thinks he's JFK joining forces to battle a mummy that's sucking the souls out of the other patients), I have to say I was ultimately disappointed. A B movie feels like a B movie no matter how cool the concept is. And this one definately has the aura of a B movie.

I really liked Bubba Ho-Tep (while admittedly having a soft spot for the director, Don Coscaralli). He's the guy who brought the world the PHANTASM series of B-grade horror flicks. B-movies made with heart are A-oK in my book. Regular B-movies....well, they suck. BUBBA HO-TEP was a B-movie made with heart. And Bruce Campbell really nailed his performance, I thought.
Seen Fahrenheit 911 yet, JACkory-?

Seen Fahrenheit 911 yet, JACkory-? Hey, thorn...sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you...haven't spent much time on the computer lately... No, I have not seen Fahrenheit 9/11 yet, and I doubt I'll shell out any money at the theatre to see it. There's the slightest chance that I might rent the DVD when it comes out, but I doubt even that. I have never liked Michael Moore's style. Not having seen the film, I am not qualified to really have an opinion about it, but I will say that from what I've heard, it shouldn't be viewed as a "documentary" per se, since the aim of the film is to back up the filmmaker's own P.O.V. in regards to the president, the war in Iraq, etc., while documentary's should be concerned with nothing but the facts (even though I haven't seen it, I think it's not unreasonable to suspect that it is very likely an op-ed piece on celluloid, whether one agrees with Moore or not...that is his stock in trade, after all). I saw Mean Girls at the 50 cent theatre yesterday...don't get to go to the 50 cent theatre like I used to because of hours being cut at my employer, but when I saw that this was playing I made a special attempt to see it, having seen the trailers. I was not dissappointed. It was one of the best, funniest movies I've seen in a long time, and judging from the huge crowd in the theatre (and their reaction to it) I'm not alone in that opinion. It's the kind of movie that you think is going to be lame until about 20 minutes into it when you discover that you've been sucked into the world the characters are living in, that you care about them, can empathize with them and by the time it's over you're wishing it was another hour long. Highly reccomended, and if you miss it in the theatre, you have NO EXCUSE not to check it out on DVD. In the grand tradition of my RS.com 50 cent theatre reviews, I must say that it was WELL worth the 50 cents I paid for it, and I would have gladly paid $10.00 to see it in first run and called it money well spent. Will also rent the DVD when it comes out and watch it again. Now Playing: Pearl Jam YieldPreparing to embark upon a Pearl Jam jag the likes of which have really been witnessed in the Bible belt, and chose this one to kick it off. Don't ask me why I chose this one, but I did. And I gotta say, I noticed it when I first heard it and I still think Vedder was listening to too much Led Zeppelin IV when he wrote the melody to "Given To Fly", as it sounds like the most blatant rip-off of "Going To California" ever committed to the digital medium. But you know what? I love it! And "Wishlist" is an all time classic. Haven't heard it in a while, and it sounds really good to me now in my marijuana-free mindset, even if I am hearing it with a certain amount of nerve-damage induced hearing loss (confirmed by the audiologist last Thursday and to be blamed on playing live music without hearing protection as well as getting stoned and passing out with the headphones on and cranked to headache-inducing volume back in those stoner days...take my advice, kiddies...buy some good hearing protection if yer gonna play that rock and roll and if yer gonna get stoned and listen to music, watch the volume, 'kay?)...

I thought so... Nice to draw you out of your lurker status long enough to post! Hey, have you ever heard the Ohio Players' song "Fire"? Wouldn't it be cool to jam that track in the station house and see if anybody sings along or dances to it? "Cool" or "lame"...could swing either way, I tell ya! Peace!
