i predict the show will be a maddeningly inconsistent, sometimes brilliant, but mostly just tasteful show.

I heard Husky Rescue for the FOURTH time on XMU yesterday... What is keeping me from buying their album? ? ? All 4 of the songs I heard were really great.
If I could change anything about XM's programming right this moment I would tweak XM77 Audio Visions and remove any and all songs that feature vocals (especially Enya), and I would also limit all beat-heavy fare to Starsteams (and there are days when I wish they'd axe Starstreams but sometimes it's tolerable...that dj "Forest" has the most irritating speaking voice I've ever heard in my life). Ambient music is okay there as long as it is true ambient, not relying on rhythms or beats. Space music is certainly fine, as I wouldn't want to lose the Tangerine Dream stuff. More Windham Hill would be great. It shouldn't be too hard for someone who knows the genre to discern between the good stuff and the dreck fluff (of which there are equal amounts, I believe), so I wish they'd play more REAL "new age music" and leave the beat-heavy stuff to a late-night corner of XM83 The System. Plus, it wouldn't hurt to replay Hearts of Space sometime during the day... Am I the only one here who listens to Audio Visions regularly?

The process of listening to Joy Division is usually quite pre-meditated. You really CHOOSE to listen to Joy Division when/if you do, and for me, that involves a bit of mental/emotional/psychic preperation, because I know just how powerful the music and lyrics can be, and I am well aware of their ability to intensify the darker side of the spirit (there's nothing like the Curtis Crew to make wallowiong in one's depression a rich venture). So it was really kind of a shock to me when I first heard Joy Division on Fred, straight out of the blue, no choice of mine, like it or switch the channel, you know? And as a result I was able to listen to them in a fresh new way. I heard aspects of the music that had previously escaped me...like beams of light that made my old perception of the pitch-black JD sound seem a little short-sighted. I love it when Fred plays some Joy Division (and it's even more special when they play something from New Order's Movement, since I have all of JD's stuff but don't have that album...and it really is basically Joy Division with Ian on holiday).

They have their moments...especially when they stick to the real pioneering underground essentials. When they venture into the 90's I get a little skittish...that's not what I'm listening to Fred for, you know?

And I know what you mean about Joy Division...that's one of the beauties of XM, I think, how bands you never expected to hear out of the blue just, well, come out of the blue with a full-on assault. It's not the same as shuffling up an mp3 player...you know what MIGHT be on its way, then, and it may come as a pleasant surprise but never a shock.
But yeah, after that Joy Division they played some Talking Heads and some Smiths...nice. Got "The Unforgettable Fire" on right now.

So I'm listening to Fred, doing some chin-ups, when The Fixx comes on, reminds me of Def777, and I fall off the bar laughing.

Ha! That's right! Deffy thought the Fixx were the bomb, didn't he? That's hilarious!
Still listening to a lot of XM77 Audio Visions and last night I checked out a bit o' XM70 Real Jazz. But I've been hankering for whole albums the last couple of days, so the XM's been given a little rest.

Interpol's "Not Even Jail" on XM 43...I'd gotten a bit bored with these guys, but it's crazy how XM can play a song out of the blue and it hits you like a stiff kick to the nuts. Even bands I senselessly bash, like Wolf Parade and The Shins, have made me rethink things after hearing them one song at a time in radio format...
And yeah, ol' Def, that guy LOVED The Fixx, almost as much as Def Leppard and Mutt Lange. Well, maybe not that much...
Y'know, if that guy was posting today, he'd get marked for a phony or a troll. But I'm CONVINCED he was the real deal, and I wonder how he's coped with the world since then. He should be about college age now, eh?
I often wonder what the fuck happened to Monkey and Val and the other little early teens who used to post...which is pretty fucking lame, but still.

I heard the White Stripes on Unsigned yesterday, which is weird, because they aren't Canadian. It was the Stripes doing a Tegan and Sara song though, so maybe they get a pass for covering Canadians.

The last few days my XM listening has been confined exclusively to XM150-XM Classics. That's just about all I've really been in the mood for. I think it stems from all the LimeWire DLing I've been doing of late 20th century avant garde and pioneering electronic music. I've got some very intriguing stuff by Karlheinz Stockhausen, George Crumb, Iannis Xenakis and Olivier Messiaen. "Telemusik" by Stockhausen, in particular, is quite enjoyable and when I listen to it I can't help but think thatJohn Lennon must have used it as a key inspiration for "Revolution #9".
The other day I heard a Dave Dudley song on Hank's Place and it made me want to DL a whole slew of his "trucker songs". What a hilarious disc that turned out to be! My personal favorite is an ode to the three things that keep truckers runnin', "Rolaids, Doan's Pills and Preperation H". Ha!
I'm too lazy to look for myself...can anyone tell me when that Dylan show is scheduled to premier on Deep Tracks (or if it's already debuted)?
