This board is created escpecially for those in our community who have XM Satellite Radio...and it's also open to anyone who may be thinking about getting XM or is just interested in what XM has to offer. Everyone is welcome to contribute, but as a rule the posts should generate with XM-related subject matter (for instance, if someone mentions a Rolling Stones song that they heard on XM and it spins into a discussion about the Stones, that's cool...however it's not cool to jump in with a topic that has nothing to do with something that wasn't originally brought up as a result of XM-generated conversation...Good Lord, that's verbose)... Basically the XM listener is encouraged to post what he/she is listening to at the moment, opinions on songs and station programming, praise for what you find praiseworthy, scorn for what you find detestable, suggestions as to how YOU would improve aspects of XM if you had the chance...You get the general idea. Anyone who doesn't have XM yet and has questions about it should feel free to ask and I (or anyone else who wishes) will do my best to answer. I don't want this to be JUST for XM subscribers...I really do want it to turn into a forum of discussion about all the stuff that's on XM, and that covers an extremely wide spectrum, so let's get this thing started!
Currently listening to: XM 72: Beyond Jazz. Have no idea who is on right now cuz the reciever is in the other room and I'm too lazy to get up and check it. I like Beyond Jazz quite a bit, but I wish they would play a lot more of the pioneering fusion bands like Weather Report and Return to Forever.

I have XM in my car and like it plenty. Problem is, I don't drive much now that I'm in a city with an actual functioning mass transit system, so I don't listen to it much. I need to buy that home kit as soon as I have a little extra money to spend.

The home kits aren't too expensive, I don't think...I don't know if mine was "close-out prices" but it was only 25 bucks. That's another thing I love about XM. One reciever and you can interchange it with a home unit, a car unit or the boom box. Would be very much worth the dough, Rocky, to invest in a home adaptor. I didn't get the car adaptor because I knew I'd listen to so much XM that my CDs would get neglected if I didn't listen to them in the car. What do you like to listen to when you drive? (I didn't know you had XM...that's cool!)

Hi, Ken...check in again soon and hopefully there will be plenty for you to give your 2 cents worth on. And do me a favour...if you decide to get a satellite radio, check 'em both out pretty thoroughly. It's pretty well an unspoken understanding amongst XM subscribers that XM has deeper playlists and better variety when it comes to music programming. I can't say that from experience, because I've never had Sirius, but from what I've read in XM fan forums the only thing Sirius has going for it is Howard Stern...that's a minus for me, as I could care less...XM has been around longer and knows their music audience better than Sirius does. Besides, you're gonna want to be a regular listener to Bob Dylan's show on Deep Tracks starting next month, right?

If I were gonna make the jump any time soon, it would almost certainly be to XM. I hate Howard Stern ... no, actually I totally don't care about Howard Stern, so he's a net negative for me.
Also, if I get one it's probably going to be for the home, and maybe the office. I've always liked being able to pick my own playlists, and so tend to listen to my own catalog rather than radio even when the radio is good.
I also really don't like the idea of one more $15 per month bill. I'd probably just go ahead and prepay a year or something like that ...
Maybe when I hear what kind of stuff Dylan's going to be playing, that will convince me to make the jump.

I don’t know how they sell Sirius units down there but up here you just pop it off the auto bracket, bring her in & hook her up. No separate home kit required.

It depends on which model of radio you have. Some of the more expensive ones are versatile like that I think, but some of them require separate equipment for home/car. Edit: Ah, yeah, I have XM, not Sirius. Maybe all the Sirius models are portable like that...

I have the Tao XM2go set...not only can I take it jogging with me, but it can wirelessly broadcast to a free FM frequency in my car...so yeah, best deal ever.

JAC, I mostly listen to Station 43, XMU. It's the indie rock station, though I often run over to the decade channel sets. I'll probably d Bluegrass only tomorrow, just for the sake of appreciating everything I have at my disposal.

Ethel and Lucy are both great. I also enjoy the Loft and even the Torch, because not only is the music really funny (I swear I once heard a song that sounded exactly like the "BURN IN HEAVEN" Moral Orel parody) but it's occasionally pretty damn good, too. And obviously the Boneyard.

The Torch! I heard Daniel Amos' "The Staggering Gods" on there a couple of days ago and thought "It's about time they played some DA on XM!" I've heard lots of decent stuff there, but yeah, there are some bands that aren't quite up to paar. That's actually something I like about the Torch...the sincerity of the messenger is given consideration sometimes over and above the "quality" of the material/musicianship. I think that's something that helps make Fungus work, too...speaking of which, I heard Cabaret Voltaire's "Sensoria" there Sunday night...How does "Sensoria" qualify as "punk"? Not saying it doesn't, mind you, but you gotta admit it is worlds apart from the typical garage band fare...
I don't know about Sirius, but I would think that you would have to have an adaptor unit to use it at home simply by virtue of the fact that an antenna is required. The antenna is part of the car-kit and stays in the car, so if you're transferring it to your home you still have to have an antenna, and that's the main component of the home kit (which consists of an antenna, a stand that is connected to the antenna that you plug it into, an AC adaptor and input cords). At least that's how XM works, and I can't imagine that Sirius is much different since the nuts and bolts of Satellite radio are the same, only the programming is different.
I understand your penchant for programming your own music, Ken...still there is something exciting about hearing music you've never heard before in genres you don't normally get to hear on terrestrial radio...plus, I have no doubt that you would enjoy the news stations (BBC World Report is an excellent world news resource) as well as the talk & entertainment channels. You can pay a year in advance or even longer than that if you choose...they have several subscription packages, and you will save money if you go with something longer than the monthly rate.
Gee, I sound like an XM marketing representative, don't I?
I think Dylan's show is probably going to be a lot like Tom Petty's Buried Treasures show, where Petty plays the music that inspired him throughout his career and talks about what the songs mean to him. But I don't know...wouldn't it be cool if Dylan did that but also played his own songs and gave personal interpretations of them?
Kenny, I get in the mood to listen to XMU every now and again. I enjoy the diversity. Have you heard them play any Husky Rescue there? I've heard 'em 3 times now, 3 different songs and loved each one of 'em. Gonna have to buy that album soon.

Isn't Dylan also supposed to occassionally bring in guests for interviews? That should be different...Dylan actually being the interviewer and all.
