So...the hockey season's about to start...new season and new rules too! Like the idea of the goals move back and more mobile goaltenders. I'm not sure if I like the idea of a shootout to determine the outcome of a game...as a soccer adept I can see the value of a hard fought draw better than a (possible not quite fair) victory by one team....
So what does the panel think of all the novelties?

I’m still not reconciled to the 10-minute overtime period to settle regular season ties, so you can just guess what I think of the shootout. I fucking hate it. Always thought that it was a lamentable part of the international game that a championship could be decided that way but in the context of the NHL regular season, it just strikes me as a totally cheap gimmick. What’s wrong with ties anyway? 2- 2, 3-3 games are a part of hockey lore. If you must force a resolution, however, let it be decided in 5 on 5 play.
Don’t like that they moved the goal line or the new restrictions on goaltenders playing the puck either. All this emphasis on trying to produce higher scoring games – there’s nothing to say that this is going to necessarily result in better, more exiting hockey. In this case I think you’re just going to get a lot more of the team on offence dumping the puck in, as opposed to forwards trying to carry the puck into the zone. IMO if the NHL really wants to open up the game, they should just fork out the bucks and go to European-size ice surfaces.
On the plus side, however, I do like the re-instatement of the tag-up offside rule. And I’m cautiously in favour of the new two-line pass rule.
