Great pics Mary! No one can accuse you of not taking advantage of everything that Memphis has to offer. Now how 'bout some shots inside that God-fearing downtown bookstore.

Those are some great pics! I agree with Phil on the washer/dryer shot... truly excellent! I especially loved your story about how you got it. After the story, I looked again at the pic and was delighted to see the blue glow of your laptop! Damn, I wish we were there for that festival! Shit!!! I've just got to say that if you ever get a chance to see Richard Johnston there in Memphis, definitely go see him! He's really a great performer. I haven't kept up with his schedule lately, but he's promised me that I can have free tickets to any of his shows anywhere at all for me and "mine" - whoever I bring along. He's had a fantastic PBS special done about him and his music that has been aired in AL and CA that I know of... He's gone through a pretty rough time lately, though, since his friend Jessie Mae Hemphill died. They performed together on occasion, and it was a great loss for him. Anyway... have a great time, and keep those pics coming!

That's funny about the laptop glow in the washer/dryer pic - I hadn't even noticed that until you mentioned it, then I went back and looked again myself, and sure enough, there's the blue glow! Anyhow, so today I skipped out on most of the Festival because I wrote a lecture, but I did make sure to go for two Memphis legends: Jim Dickinson and Sonny Burgess. In between the two sets I wandered around the back alleys and abandoned parts of downtown memphis and took pictures of derelict buildings, shattered glass, and general urban decay - for all the talk of downtown revitalization, much of the downtown is still boarded up, bruised, and battered. It's a very melancholy place, with all these faded signs from a dead past on the sides of long-abandoned buildings. It's also kind of beautiful, of course.... Anyhow - here's Jim Dickinson. If you haven't heard of him, shame on you. This guy has worked with or produced everybody who's anybody - big star, the replacements, the stones, dylan, flamin' groovies, aretha franklin, screamin' jaw hawkins, etc etc: And here's Sonny Burgess. A rockabilly legend, obviously, and also one of the first recorded artists on Sun: Here's an awesome couple in the audience at Sonny Burgess, all decked out in their rockabilly finest: On my way out of the festival I walked past a bunch of folks square dancing. I paused to ponder the fact that square dancing is possibly the single most unhip activity in which a human being can engage, which, consequently, makes it extremely hip: Then here are the shots of abandoned, decaying downtown Memphis. Forgive all the weird effects; I was playing around with the settings on my camera... Cheers, M

My brother recently had baboons in his backyard:

Wow, that's awesome. All I get in my backyard are bunnies, squirrels and skunks and the occasional raccoon.
Baboons scare me though - they can be quite vicious can't they? I'd be hiding inside if I saw those buggers in my yard.

Yeah, his neighbors told him not to go out if they come around. I guess they come down to the village every few months or so. Dogs can sense them coming before they get there though, so he gets some warning when his dog starts going crazy.

That's wild. How long do they stick around? Pretty cool photos though, even if he's trapped in his house.

I think he said they were around for an hour or so. His dog was flipping out at the back door, so he opened the door and one jumped off the roof right then. He was, well, pretty surprised. Freaky. Here's one more.

What the hell? Um. . .where does your bro live, again?

Botswana.
Yeah, it makes a lot more sense when you know where he lives. I sent that to a friend of mine who didn't realize he wasn't still living in Maryland, and she was very confused.
