Yesterday my friend and I drove all over the poorest neighborhoods in Memphis, on both the North and South sides of the city, for a project we're trying to do. (won't get into the details but we're putting together a photo-exhibit of daycare centers, juxtaposing the dilapidated shacks in the poorest zip codes to the lavish resorts in the wealthy burbs). Saw some crazy shit, go figure. And had some...interesting...encounters. (though I should also say that the vast vast majority of people we encountered were SUPER nice and friendly - just as we were to them - go figure, a smile and a friendly word goes a long way!)
Some pics:
Daycare center in South Memphis:
Barbershop in Orange Mound, ultra-poor South Memphis neighborhood where Three Six Mafia are from:
Gutted billboard in South Memphis:
Crazy looking bar in South Memphis that I should clearly start hanging out at (not):
Sign next to the door of another South Memphis daycare center:
Barbed wire around South Memphis daycare center lot:
North Memphis convenient store:
Empty lot on Thomas Street, in North Memphis - this neighborhood used to be based around a big Firestone factory, but with the deindustrialization the factory disappeared and with it, most of the neighborhood jobs:
Painted warning on a nightclub along Thomas Street:
Thomas Street:
Abandoned pinball place on Thomas Street:
Locals hanging out at a convenient store on Thomas Street:
Ominous message scrawled along the side of a Thomas Street building:
North Memphis daycare center:
Window at another North Memphis daycare center:
BREASKFAST joint on Jackson Ave in North Memphis:
Another "No Firearms Allowed" sign at a North Memphis daycare center:
