Life sucks.
My boyfriend's father died unexpectedly yesterday morning at 57 years old. I didn't know him too well, but I can't help but feel completely fucking horrible. I suck at this shite, and I don't know how to be consoling, especially considering no one knows about us from his side of things. I love this kid, and I want to do the best that I can to be there for him.
Don't ask me why I'm going on about this, but I guess I just needed to vent. Peace.

I'm not even sure about all the bands I got into thanks to RSers, but I know I got into X because of Mary, and I just recently got into the Undertones thanks to tunes.

Slark..I'm sorry to hear the bad news.......
Mary.............John Doe pointed at the guy and said (verbatim) "If you're flipping off the world, that's fine..but if you're flipping us off, then get the f*&k out of here"!!!!.................but the guy still persisted..but geez, Mary, the majority of the "slammers" were well over 20 years old, and it really did take me by surprise...I was on some seats adjacent to the slammers and twice we got shoved back quite a bit.............sheer stupdity........
And you're exactly right about Exene..regardless of her image, she is very charismatic................it is kinda wierd seeing these erstwhile punkers (they must all be well over their 40s, and I believe zoom is 50-something) still playing "punk rock" with the same energy and commitment...but as we've discussed about other band, they never hamstrung themselves with lyrics geared solely to adolescence..thus, similar to Lou Reed or Peter Gabriel or others, they can continue to play their same songs, with the same astute observations, 20 years hence and not sound dated......New World sounded as pertinent as it did 20 years ago.......................

Matheus, I'm so sorry to hear about your boyfriend's father. It is always hard to know how to act in such situations, but I'm sure that if you care about him, you'll manage to do the right thing. yeah bowiglou, New World definitely hasn't lost an ounce of relevance today!! I had the exact same thought when they played it back in April. Did John Doe offer any personal commentary before he launched into that song? When I saw them, he said something like "Exene, Exene, do you know how I feel about the world today?" and then he just kinda threw up his hands in exasperation and said "aw, fuck it... here's a song" and started playing the New World. Sounds pretty lame onscreen but somehow it worked well. I'm surprised to hear about all these slamming 40-somethings though. We get none of that in SF!! Maybe L.A. brings out the real die-hard aging punks because it's the home of X. (was this show in l.a. or san diego??) In any case I much prefer SF audiences, and I never thought I'd say that, being as SF audiences win the fuckin prize when it comes to standing around loudly talking throughout an entire show and paying no attention whatsoever to the band onstage. speaking of X i'm pleased to have introduced so many rs.commers to my sometimes-favorite band Cheers, M

Mary - How is it possible to talk through an entire show? I can see how that could be possible for some of the quieter acts, but for a lot of bands, wouldn't that be sort of difficult, with all the sound coming from the stage?
I should also add that I think that men in their 40s moshing is rather sad.

Pretty pathetic, actually! (IMO, of course)

I hope you're implying that it's the 40s moshers that are pathetic, and not me for finding them sad I wonder if this means that I'm being discriminatory towards old people. For the record though, I'm not a big fan of moshers in general, young or old. I mean, I don't care if they do it, as long as they stay the fuck away from me. I don't enjoy being kicked in the back of the head.

Hey everyone - thanks for the birthday wishes! I did indeed have a fantastic birthday and an all-round great birthday... and now I'm back at work and it blows a thousand goats. A few thoughts... -Slark, sorry to hear the sad news. Like Mary said, it's hard to know what to do at times like this - but just do what you can to be there for him. Actions speak louder than words. -Mary, I'm glad your weekend went so well with the boy and your folks and your old friends and all. Sounds like good times. -Lucky Bow, seeing John Doe and going to an X show! -I definitely need a change in life. Every time I go back home, I remember why it's so important to me that we move back there. So many people I love. -I got another haircut that I love!
