Nocturama was a bit aimless for me.

Good list by the way luke. Here's the bands I'd reject, though I haven't got time to go into it:-
STP SoaD ATDI BRMC Screaming Trees.
The rest I pretty much either love (Pumpkins) or respect (Sleater-Kinney).
Still haven't got around to listening to Mars Volta.

Screaming Trees could be snagged with a bit of a Pixies influence, but really, I think they stray more into the Dinosaur, Jr. aspect of grunge rip-offs.
I know of your ATDI and BRMC bits, but...
I'd say System of a Down are one of the most underappreciated bands out there by non-mainstream type listeners. They've really got a very complex sound of their own, and I've never really heard much like it. Also, they thrash like few others, and are trumped only by TOOL as the greatest stadium rockers on earth..

Yeah Luke the Raveonettes is just one of those slip thru the cracks type records I even underestimatred how good it was in my list last year(#33 out of 50,I think)
This is a great arguement for anybody and personal taste is the key issue I find most of the time myself very open to anything new as long as there is some effort and artistic ideals whether arrangements(IDM music) or cryptic lyrics that cause you to pay close attention to what's being said(majority of college rock music)
I'm lucky due to my postion I hear a lot of music before most of the public does(ex: The Killers) I don't have to buy that many albums a year due to promos I usually hear 55-70 new records on average a year at least since 99.
However I will seek out something specfic if I'm curious(Loretta Lynn,Junior Boys for example this year) but what do you expect from a guy who's uncle was a college dj and gave me a Clash/Public Enemy mixtape when I was 10

allright I can't lie, I think Chancellor is better. Pissin, the Good Lord will doubtless reward your honesty. Possibly by sparing you the locusts or something. On the other hand, He's probably still seriously pissed off at you about the gay marriage stuff.

BRMC are just a bit too much like Jesus/Mary Chain who I quite fancy and do a killer cover of "The Hardest Button to Button though both are solid bands
I'll add to the list Deftones Husker Du
SoaD are in the middle in my opinon they fall in my
10 Bands glad Rage Against The Machine Broke Up 1.Audioslave 2.SoaD 3.Linkin Park 4.ATDI/Mars Volta/Sparta(it's a triangle people) 5.P.O.D 6.Incubus 7.Thursday 8.Story of The Year(AGHHGH) 9.Korn(who I like but seem larger since Rage left) 10.S.T.U.N.

SOAD weren't very good stadium rockers when I seen them. And after all these years, that title still belongs to Metallica.

Yeah, I guess that ripping the Jesus and Mary Chain does count as British soil. I thought of the influence, but overlooked its source...
I'll never be a Rage fan. I hate De La Rocha, I can't stand Morello's overrated "let's turn the volume up on some tired old psychedelia and pretend it's earth-shattering" guitar work.
Personally, I always looked at ATDI as the far superior of the two bands when they were both around. As for SoaD, well, I really don't think Rage ever came close to those heights.
Also, I dunno if I'd say that Korn has gotten "bigger" since Rage left. I guess it's all in perspective, but to me Korn peaked in popularity around Follow the Leader (that's the Ice Cube one, right?) and have since kinda hung on with hardcore fans and not much else.

Really? SoaD kicked my ass.
Metallica would be great stadium rockers if the music playing in the stadium didn't suck so hard.

Husker Du owns but they were before the Pixies. In fact, I think they fell apart at around the same time the Pixies emerged.

Cool jllm, thanks for the mix - I look forward to it. Drum, to get back to Nick Cave for a minute (shockingly!) - ya know, I'm gonna defend ol' St. Nick for a minute against these charges of skirting self-parody on both ends of the spectrum - both the romantic crooning and the over-the-top diabolic stuffing-women-into-ovens stuff. Hasn't Nick Cave's entire career been one long exercise in crazy over-the-top melodrama? I think a lot of people who love Nick Cave love him not in spite of this, but because of this. I don't know why a song about stuffing women into ovens is any more self-parodic than a song about a mutant, murderous travelling carny show. For one thing, it's totally unfair to interpret these songs as if they're just pure darkness and not black humor. All of Nick Cave's bands had deliriously profane senses of humor, which were almost always neglected or missed by critics - personally, I look forward to a song about stuffing women into ovens (I never thought I'd write that sentence!!) as another opportunity for Nick to be hilarious in his wonderfully warped and misanthropic way. And the same goes for the romantic Nick as well - when Nick is romantic, he is always capital-R Romantic. Personally, I just don't think Nick sounded very good crooning on Nocturama and I thought most of the songs were rather anemic - not enough memorable melodies. The difference between The Ship Song and She Passed By My Window isn't that one tumbles over the edge of parody and the other doesn't - it's that one has a gorgeous, timeless melody, and the other is just boring. OK, there's my requisite defense of St. Nick... I'm outta here NP: Nick Cave - Tender Prey (song: The Mercy Seat) Cheers, M
