that markus james is a great record but his 'snakeskin violin' disc is even better...like chris whitley playing with a top notch band from mali. one of my favorite out-of-the-blue picks this year from what i saw available on the library search engine here.
the one agolloch that i found (the same way - library) wasn't one i got into at the time...i seem to recall the vocalist cookie-monstering away pretty horribly. tho i could be wrong especially since i don't imagine don p going for that sorta shit. there's only a handful of bands that redeem themselves OVER that cookie-monster 'deathgrowl' for my tastes. testament, mayhem maybe. i'll look for it again when i get to my office - filed under 'metal'.
the jimi boots you've got phil...of concerts or outtakes? these outtake selections that are showing up here and there are fascinating listening, hearing jimi think through songs like 'watchtower'....
NP:
'WXRT chicah-go'
(rod stewart - every picture...) still gotta go walk the dog...

His vocals feel more Emperor-ish these days. I don't recall any vocals that were cookie monster like....

That throaty growl comes and goes, especially on their album THE MANTLE which is filled with what I'd call a " heavy starkness" .... really is a beaut of an album IMO. This is a cut from it:

i listened to the one i have, the 2006 'ashes against the grain' this morning at the office, and yeah, it's got a nice prog-metal vibe going on, meticulous detail in the sound, kinda like porcupine tree or riverside (occasionally maybe barclay james harvest even)....but that growl does come in. it's a bit cookie-monster lite, not full bore 'GRAAAAHWL!" like some of those death weird-os , but why? what, can't ya fucking 'sing'? it's just a weird juxtaposition to me...

Why? perhaps we could ask Yoko Ono.....
I can take it in doses and really the vocalizations become just that ---- can't usually discern the lyric unless you follow along with a printeout of them, so the "singing" just becomes another instrument that moves the song along. When it's really in your face, THAT I find more ridiculous in the majority of cases.....ha, as I think of it right now, it's exactly the same way I feel in trying to listen to opera! CAN'T stand it 98% of the time.
Agalloch I can get into.....but then there's something like the early days of Anathema that's a turnoff when they had the growling vocals, dumped them but retained an edge, but now seem to have progressed even more degrees away from that to the point of grown placid that I fear I'd be bored by their lastest disc.

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. I think the band that does the singing and growling thing very well is Opeth. Those guys are pretty good. I love the weird vocals in metal though. I think it had a lot to do with listening to a lot of King Diamond, Judas Priest, and Megadeth when I was a kid. I've never preferred my metal have some amazing operatic voice. Dio was always the exception to that rule but for me, the more fucked up the better.

Uncle Phil....we need to do some tradin'! I've got some stuff in the works for you...... ~~~ on the other side of the coin, some listens: BAP TonfilmMy final cheap Amazon score (thx again GH!) that arrived in the mail and am about half way through at the moment. Yeah, it's another from *that* German band that I don't understand a lick of lyrically but speaks depths to me sonically. ahhhh,,,,,heaven to me on a lonely Saturday night.....wants me to escape to a dim corner of a country Ratskeller, shove endless quarters in a jukebox there and tell the barkeep to just keep the tab open..... Merle Haggard Down Every Road box set While not a country listener by any great stretch, this is practically a must listen for just getting a sense of another side of the tracks. NOT the tales of "my wife left me/and my dog got hit out on the highway" sort....just the common stories that DO translate to any kind of life. The Heavy The House That Dirt BuiltHadn't pulled this out for a bit and it re-awoke how I felt upon first hearing them --- that 'dese guys bring it HOME! Great quote form AMG: "Jack White meets James Brown" ---- uh-huh, soulfull AND rocking! Just YouTube up How Do You Like Me Now (esp. live from the Letterman show) and you'll see what I mean. killerKillerKiller Dead Meadow Shivering King and OthersI think I remember listening to this.....it was the other weekend right? Vibrating thickness and such,,,,vines underneath, tripping and weaving a path....that was it wasn't it? AC/DC PowerageJust to remember/recall some abandonment.....all that Brian Johnson shite really pales in comparison.

NP: after someone posted T&R on here a few weeks ago. and i was able to get the s/t first disc from the libraries' system here. the rest of the BoC in therir system are the latter day albums and 'best of's'. pardon me, i KNOW the best of BoC without someone spooning it to me. i wanted the full albums, just like i have on vinyl in my collection. i couldn't GET T&R's full version from them. so T&R i dl'd just a few hours ago to fill out the disc. my impression was always that tyrannies blew away the first disc, more chugga-chugga straight-to-the-brain power i thought. sh it, not nearly! these 2 are PERFECT bookend albums for a single 80 minute disc. beginning to end. and stairway to the stars got me going into such a perfect mood to listen to these guys the rest of the day. long live CULT!
