Good luck, samples. I've done telephone work before, you'll need it! OK, that was just a little tease. It's not so bad. I'm sure you'll do great.

Yeah, good luck samps. Having heard your mumbling self-deprecation on the phone, I have to say you're going to need it

Samps- you should get the numbers from the regulars here. You'd at least have a few listening ears. Or announce yourself to the caller with a provocative name; I know I'd be pricking my ears up if I got called by Susie Sixtynine.... Happy scouting! ;D

"Do It Yourself!" [glow=yellow,2,300]That Jimmy Page guitar riff actually first appeared in Bowie's "Supermen". He later reworked it for 'Dead Man Walking'. [/glow] Wow! Kool info there, 'Kat~! ThanX

Has anyone here heard PJ Harvey's latest album? I'm thinking about buying it, I have her last 3 and love them all dearly, but for some reason I'm skeptical about this one. All I know is it isn't as clean-cut as her previous "Stories..." album.
I'm avoiding listening to sound samples on various websites because I've found it ruins the first-time listening experience. It totally ruined U2's "All that You Can't Leave Behind" for me.

That's what I don't get. How die-hard PJ purists found 'Stories' to be 'glossy'. Why? Because most songs were over 3 minutes long? Because the song structures and production was top notch? I thought it was one of her best. Much, much, much better than the distorted mess that was "Is this Desire?"
The only thing I didn't like about the album was the two closing tracks. Other than that, it's a masterpiece.

That's what I don't get. How die-hard PJ purists found 'Stories' to be 'glossy'. Why? Because most songs were over 3 minutes long? Because the song structures and production was top notch? I thought it was one of her best. Much, much, much better than the distorted mess that was "Is this Desire?" I don't think it has much of anything to do with the length of songs, although the structures and production values might have something to do with it. A lot of people who loved early PJ Harvey were attached to a particular persona and mood that she evoked brilliantly - her albums had an almost southern gothic feel to them, dirty, grimy sketches and stories about people very much on society's margins. She did crazy things with her voice, as well, squealing and whispering and roaring in ways that contributed to her borderline psychotic persona. If that's what attracted you to PJ to begin with, then you're going to be disappionted when she sounds like any old typical female pop-rock singer, which is how she sounds for most of Stories. It just feels flattened, one-dimensional, and way too conventional compared to her earlier work. I don't think there's anything wrong with it on its own terms - it's a fine pop-rock album - but I'm not a huge fan of that kind of music. I feel like it puts PJ in a similar category with people like Liz Phair, Fiona Apple, and even Dido, and she does it well, but I never liked any of those singers to begin with. The aesthetic just doesn't appeal to me. Cheers, M

I'd compare the PJ Harvey of Stories to Chrissie Hynde and Patti Smith as opposed to Fiona Apple or Dido (or Liz Phair) which puts a slightly different spin on it... But yeah, we've kicked this one around before and it really comes down to one's preference. Personally, I've never had any difficulty reconciling the artist who made Dry and Rid of Me with the one who made Stories, though.

The only PJ Harvey album I've heard (and own) is Stories...I don't listen to it much, but it's a good album, with a few great songs on it. And I have a lot of admiration and respect for Miss Harvey. I definitely want to pick up Rid of Me or To Bring You My Love soon.
