Morrissey- Ruler Or Enslaved?

Oh, prolly suppose I should enlighten this statement- thought it would lit up like a header or something.... New Moz-album is a treat! He looks decidedly older and more suave on the cover of You Are The Quarry (what's with the pink background-colour?) but he's back to his acerbic, angsty best in tracks like America's Not The World (sorry Click ) and the World's Full Of Crashing Bores...his voice is back to his whiny best, bit less power and the arrangements remind me of some of the Vauxhall And I-stuff I really liked....

Just finished a wonderful interview with Morrissey in last month's GQ. Anxious to hear the new one based on your favourable comments Maarts.

Can't wait to read some great comments from the smarmy bastard too, Riley! He is one of the most astute yet moody interviewpartners a journalist can have...
Love his new album. Must say I was a bit disappointed with the new Gomez-album. Funnest album of the week- the new Streets-album! It's a corker! Couldn't believe it myself!

I'd all but written Morrissey off after his last one but with the long layoff, all the reviews saying he's come back recharged and now Maarts favourable comments, I'm sure I'll be picking tha one up, too.

I'll try to scan that interview so I can email it to you guys or post it somewhere. Prolly not available on-line, but worth the read and a couple minutes of scan time.

Maarts.... so Gomez was a bit of a disappointment?! I've heard a few tracks here and there on Triple J which have been of a reasonable standard.... it doesn't sound like a "Bring it On" or "Liquid Skin" type album though... and maybe lacking the quality of aforementioned Gomez releases!
That Streets album sounds like a bit of a hoot in some regards... I still have a few hassles trying to take the Streets seriously myself...

I know that a lot of y'all aren't big hip hop fans, but for those that are interested in reading a really good New Yorker article on hip hop vs. rap and the new Madvillian cd, I'll post the link up. www.newyorker.com/critics/music/?040412crmu_music(no spaces to take out!)

I don't know much of anything about solo Moz (I love the Smiths but never acquried a single solo album) but I also recently read an interview with the King of Mope.... I don't ordinarily read Spin magazine but I was looking for something to entertain myself with on a long airplane flight, and there was Morrissey, staring at me from the cover of Spin magazine... I still find it weird to imagine him living in L.A. of all places, hanging out poolside and sipping frilly, girly cocktails and such. Kinda ruins my adolescent mythology about guys like Moz. At least at the end of the interview he still expressed his determination to remain alone and uninvolved for the rest of his life. So some things still make sense...
In other news, I recently grabbed my second Siouxsie compilation (I had Once Upon a Time, now I've got Twice Upon a Time as well) and I'm finding Siouxsie Sioux's voice utterly entrancing. I'm ready to enter more-than-casual-fan territory - i.e. start buying up the albums, not just the best ofs and compilations and such. Any advice? Where do I start? The Siouxse section at Amoeba is voluminous...
Cheers, M

Thanks Scottsy! I'm sure it will be a corker! How are you, BTW- recovered from the hammering the Roos dealt out to you guys?
Mary, your recent re-discovery of Siouxsie made me smile...yeah, Twice Upon A Time's a mighty compilation and features some of the band's best tracks- personally I was always attracted the most to albums like [glow=red,2,300]Hyaena[/glow] (featuring Dazzle and Swimming Horses) for the orchestral bits and the thundering guitar of Robert Smith, [glow=red,2,300]Tinderbox[/glow] (so underrated!) and the oddity and diversity of the covers-album[glow=red,2,300] Through The Looking Glass[/glow] (This Wheel's On Fire), where Kraftwerk, Iggy, Jungle Book, Roxy Music and The Sparks wander by in a panopticum of delight- really, I like what they've done with the originals and, at stages, I can even say that their version of Sea Breezes eclipses the original...(better be careful with the Roxy-mob on that one...). I wasn't too keen on things like Peek-A-Boo at the time and, after listening to the song again, i still can't warm to it and its host-albumPeep Show , although some of the cello-dominated ballads she sings aren't too bad. Twice's just about a perfect compilation though of late eighties Siouxsie and even though not all albums are that great (for essential Siouxsie-albums, I'd prefer their earlier stuff, like the brilliant Ju Ju and A Kiss In The Dreamhouse.
Current faves are the new Tweaker (Chris Vrenna featuring a host of guest vocalists) and Eskimo Joe's new album....Scott- you are gonna love that one! Together with The Panics, Epicure and new Machine Translations the best Aussie CDs of the year!
