Mary, I read a review of an entirely unrelated album earlier this week where the author made a point that innovation can sometimes be a hedge against craftsmanship. Not a charge I would pin on P.J. Harvey’s more adventurous records, but I do find it interesting that she apparently told the author of that Exclaim article that Riley posted on one of the other boards that the recording of Stories was "especially challenging".
The author says that was because she suppressed her love of the blues in making the record but what that also says to me is that she was operating outside of her comfort zone, which as an artist is a place you want to get beyond. This seems to me to be the reason an artist like P.J. Harvey would make a record like Stories – because after four or five records that defied convention to a greater or lesser degree, making a record that embraced it was as much or more of a challenge.

Would a cool tattoo be Jerry Lee, Chuck's, Carls, and Little Richards head's all together in like a diamond presentation or what? Perhaps add a little screamin jay?

I know, I'm putting on my black arm band as we speak. Stapp's recording his solo album with The Tea Party.. He's sullying the fair name of your country, Shane!

Creed broke up? Wow, that's great news. Sad that the Tea Party has sunk to such depths, though.
Haha, as I was writing that, I spelled both "sunk" and "such" as "suck."

This could be terrible news, though, if both Stapp and the band's albums are a success. That would be like two more Creeds on the radio.

Before I completely forget- thanks Mary for your extensive answers to the questions I posed- obviously the wording wasn't quite exact but you got the meaning very well out of them. I didn't mean to put words into your mouth nor paint you in a particular corner but you got that alright.
Just a stupid question, sort of meant to keep the ball rolling on these boards (now that I'm a moderator! Were you ever a member of a fanclub?

OK, admit it Maarts, you just want to see a total confession of geekdom from everyone, don't you?
Two from way, way back that I've kept up: U2 and R.E.M.

I actually got the idea today from a bunch of Kiss Army-guys who dug deep to buy some plaques and Kiss-opoly-games we're selling! Like some fans are rabid- the Kiss Army's probably one of the most notorious.
I used to be in the Fleetwood Mac-fanclub as a teen and I'm still a member of the Electronic Music Foundation back in Holland.
You receive a lot of goodies out of the fanclubs, Doc?

Yeah, those two are great for that, maarts. With R.E.M. you get a Christmas single every year. They used to really put a lot of effort into them at one time, doing a special little recording session just for that purpose. Lately, they've tended to send a couple tracks from a live appearance that year, so they're not quite as much of an event. I also used to like it better when they were sending them on 45 rpm vinyl whereas recently they've been going with CD or video but all in all, still something to look forward to at that time of the year.
The U2 fanclub has so far put out two full-length CDs: the Melon remix album in '95 and Hasta La Vista, Baby: Live in Mexico City in 2000. Both pretty cool but I especially like the latter seeing as it's their first proper live album and they were in great form on the two nights they recorded it.

ok ok, I'll fess up......I was not only a member of the Monkees fan club circa 1966 but was the spearhead of starting a local chapter........f*&K, what a nerd!.....I just adored the Monkees back then, but once I caught a glimpse of the Lizard King on TV circa 1967, I found it too incongruous to be a Monkees or Doors fan hence gave away all my Monkee albums and trading cards!!!
I think I may have briefly been in the Bowie fan club, and also the Beatles, but memory is proving a bit elusive.........
But I did once write a letter to Iggy Pop, and he actually wrote back in his handwriting!!........on his American Caeser CD he wrote in the liner notes that he always enjoys hearing from fans and he would make all efforts to respond back....well, I thought that was BS, so I did spin off a letter, and much to my surprise he responded!!!!!!..........pretty cool, huh?
