I just can't believe the Stones aren't getting anymore props from you guys. Most of you are older than me, you ought to know better---Rit As this is a continuation of an enormously popular board from the old RS.com era, perhaps not everyone is familiar with my take on Beatles vs Stones... 'S kinda like my love for italian and mexican food. I love them both ever so much more than yer typical steak and potatoes, but when push comes to shove I like mexican just a tad more than italian. Same with the Beatles and the Stones. The old BvsS board at RS.com was filled with my "props" for the Stones...it's too bad that's all vanished into a black hole in cyberspace, as I would much rather point one in that direction for evidence of my abiding respect for the Stones. Truth be told, I'm not quite up to trying to duplicate it here. Suffice to say that I also explained in some longwinded detail my reasons for preferring the Beatles "ever so slightly" more on those same forums. So what I'm saying is that if I come off here as someone who champions the Beatles over the Stones at all costs, someone who holds the Beatles up as untouchable rock gods, well I don't feel that way. I've never heard those "threats of career obsession evinced by Jagger on Sticky Fingers"... The only obsession throughout the album is with drugs, as far as I see.

JAC....thank you for reviving a much revered board..now if we could only get Piper and Moongirl back in the fray...for those who know, I would love to get Piper back in the ring!!!!!
Anyway, we have had all these discourses before but I still loved reading all of your threads....as one who fell in love with the Beatles in Feb of 64 on the Ed Sullivan show then shortly thereafter the Stones on the Red Skeleton Hour (anyone recall that one?!!), I adored both bands; I can recall first being most impressed with Decembers's Children (1965) and Between the Buttons, but it was still Beatle albums (US versions) that most resonated for me, from mom and dad bringing home Meet the Beatles from their Vegas trip to the Beatles 2nd LP (I still count You Can't do That as one of my faves) to Hard Days Night up to Let it Be/Abbey Road......in fact, though I would buy every Beatles LP upon release, I really didn't get deeply into the Stones until high school (1971-1974) when I then started a mini-collection (Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, etc.)
That being said, I did vote (predictably) for the Beatles, and to this day, if you stuck me on a desert island would I prefer the best Beatles LP that I adore (tie between Rubber Soul and Revolver) or the best Stones (Let it Bleed) and I just gotta go for the Beatles.......it was an interesting comment earlier that it seemed the Stones are more timeless, whereas the Beatles may be more constrained to a era long gone......however, I still find when I hear 'we can work it out' or 'fixing a hole' or 'while my guitar gently weeps', my instant resonance for those songs is not based on some pining away for that nostalgic-feeling, but rather they are beautifully crafted songs, and if they were conconcted by a current artist, I would be equally impressed.....
Back then, the Stones were always painted as the 'bad boys' and the Beatles otherwise.....it was a glib comparision that many magazines made issue of (e.g, 16 magazine, Tiger Beat, etc.), but I never quite bought into that image. Hell, the criminally underappreciated and underrated Kinks, and the Who for that matter, were equal to the task of being hell-on-wheels as the Stones. But if there is any one reason that the Beatles (keeping in mind I"m a huge Stones fan also) most resonates for me, is due to the mujsical melange and lyrics that I found engaging and intriguing. Though Street Fighting Man, Salt of the Earth, Sympathy for the Devil, As Tears Go By, Paint it Black, Wild Horses, etc, all were exemlary in their craft, I rarely paid as much due to the lyrics of the Stones as I did to the Beatles..............
...anyway, I could go on and on..and if this board persists, I will!!!!
...but let's not forget the Kinks!!..the true progenitor of my much loved Jam!!!

Sorry, bow, I can't take credit for reviving the hallowed BvsS board. Kudos should be directed to Maarts.
I love you, maarts...you know I do!

Well, kudos should go to everybody to pick up the baton and keep on running!
I got into the Beatles and Stones quite late- growing up in a family who loved music. I went through wave after wave of music since the seventies (electronic, punk, new wave, baggy, shoegazing, the Scene that Celebrates Itself, grunge, collegerock...seen it come and go). At one stage I loved stuff like REM, the Feelies etcetera and fell back on The Beatles as a much heard reference. I grew up with the singles but not the albums. Got Sgt. Peppers and Revolver from an uncle and fell in love with the textures of the first and the songs of the latter. Something the Stones couldn't repeat for me. Loved the psychedelia on The White Album (I'm also a nut for the west Coast-psychedelic surge of the late sixties, to Klaatu and the prog-rock scene a decade later, and so forth) and that's what in my view has set The Beatles apart from the Stones. As professional and honest a performers like Mick n Keef were, there was this invisible class from the Fab Four, this effortlessness almost in arranging and moodswings galore that made them just that much better. Where the Stones wanted to rawk and put their fist through your teeth with their straight out rock, the Beatles wanted to envelop you in all these strange sounds, either quirky or dark. It just grabbed me more as a listener. To see Sir Mac use these tunes nowadays as big stadiumfillers, as justified as he is in performing them, they do injustice to the Beatles-legacy, whereas the Stones justifiably have made that jump because it's where they belong. Perhaps the comparison is not really fair and we should actually discuss why George was the most influential Beatle...

Top Five Beatles: 1. Revolver. 2. Abbey Road. 3. The Beatles (the white album) 4. Rubber Soul 5. Help!
Top Five Stones: 1. Let It Bleed 1. Beggar's Banquet (twin masterpieces, can't hear one without the other, tied for the top) 3. Hot Rocks (I've always maintained that the Stones were a singles band, after all, so it's either this or the 3 cd Decca Singles Box) 4. Sticky Fingers. 5. Some Girls.
