ken- sure I understand what you mean as rock and roll is a mammoth of a term to come to grips with. I just stuck to the more traditional way of rock as in the sense that funk=funk, soul=soul...you could just go ahead and add Weather Report then too if jazzrock's a part of the beast...but it all comes down to personal perception as There's A Riot Going On is a funk-album with a rock 'n roll-heart- definitely have a listen to that one, Ken!
Just realised- not too many ladies in the lists. I'd like to mention to the Raincoats and the Runaways then.

100 Million Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong, that's actually the name of their boxed set. Sure enough, they can't be wrong... but they are mighty stupid! :-)

Bush voters you say ... gives new meaning to the term "Living On A Prayer", don't it? :-) They also had a song called "Living In Sin". Then there's their other classic track "Keep The Faith". The more I think about it, the more I believe that maarts might be right. Of course, the dudes in Bon Jovi say they're 'democrats', but it could be a case of "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer". Sounds like a conspiracy theory. For all we know, judging by their trite lyrics, Jon-boy might even be one of Bush's key speech writers.

The Partridge Family was No. 13 on my list. Right after the Wailers. Yep. Regarding definitions, I agree with Ken that that’s half the fun and I like the "big tent" approach as well. Everlys – Influence isn’t everything in a discussion like this but isn’t theirs just absolutely pervasive? Five decades now and if you’re listening to a voice-blending rock’n’roll act, you can still trace it all back to them! BTW Ken, we’re good on that board header thing.

yeah, SMASHING PUMPKINS and ALICE IN CHAINS have GOT to go in the "Top 10 American Rock Bands" list. Everyone's input has been very good, and is helping me to focus & condense the "proper" best American rock bands ever (for me). I know RUSH has to go in there, as well as Aerosmith, and AIC, and the pumpkins, and if anyone objects to the inclusion of TOOL, then I suggest you stop listening to ROCK MUSIC - -cuz yer heart just ain't in it, obviously

Yeah, kind of weird they haven't been brought up more. Sign of the times? Ten years ago they would probably be in a lot of people's top 3 or so.

Thorn. Flattering that you would include them on your list, but can we have Rush back up here when you're done calling them American

According to Ken's guidelines, it's the whole North American continent and islands, Riley. I don't see why it shouldn't include Central and South America as well, but then we haven't had many rock and roll bands from, say, Peru, that have made a really big splash.

See, I specifically wanted to include Canadian artists in this list, in part b/c of my own desire to list The Band in here.
As for Nirvana ... I've thought a lot about them in regards to this exercise. I've got no doubt that Nirvana were on a par with, if not above, many or most of the other names batted about. The problem is the amount of their output, and the fact that (with the exception of MTV Unplugged) that output is all really in one genre. Unlike the Velvets, who made four dramatically different records, Nirvana made three very similar studio albums and an absolute killer live acoustic set. I dunno ... thinking about the quality of those records, it is hard to deny them a spot on this list, but then how do you measure that against Pearl Jam (always the most obvious comparison) who have continually pushed at their sound (without ever conducting obvious genre hopping exercises a la David Bowie), made a ton of extremely fine records, and put out some of the best live recordings in rock?
Well ... I'm gonna do an alternate list shortly, we'll see who makes the final cut ...
