Who is the top rock and roll band to come from the North American continent? Canadian and Mexican acts are eligible as well. So who is it? Creedence Clearwater Revival? The Band? X? R.E.M.? or how about the Velvet Underground?

I don't see how there's any doubt that the greatest american rock n' roll band is Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. They count as witnessed by a disernable drop in quality of albums that don't feature the E- Street...matter fact I'd say they were more of a band then GBV ever were. So anyway...
1. Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band 2. The Band 3. The Beach Boys

I considered X, but to be honest, I don't consider them a rock band.
They are a punk band.
Most Certainly America's Greatest Punk Band.

1) The Velvet Underground 2) X 3) Wilco 4) Guided by Voices 5) Prison Rodeo Sorry for the plug. No need to apologize! Although I think those are all great choices, again I'm not entirely comfortable with placing any of these in the strictly "rock" category. [Except I've never heard "Prison Rodeo", so I wouldn't know about them]

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band 2. The Band 3. The Beach Boys Out of these I'd consider the Boss to be the only one that really crosses the border into "rock and roll". Now The Band is a fine choice, and they've been known to rock, but their folk legacy overshadows that aspect, IMO. As for the Beach Boys . . . I'm sorry, their legacy remains solid & intact, but they have far too much "pop" and "surf" overtones to be considered strictly a ROCK BAND!!!!!! I mean, where's Lynyrd Skynyrd, they're a ROCK band (albeit "Southern" rock). The Doors. Van Halen. THE BYRDS, even. Now there's an interesting choice. . . *[I'm afraid even Lynyrd Skynyrd is too "genre specific", like The Allman Bros, both being "southern" rock. But I concede that may not altogether be enough reason to DISqualify them from the "rock" category...I'm just saying it's something to keep in mind]

Wow, when you take the UK out of the equation, it's tough to hang the crown on any one band. Lots of contenders in their 'subgenres' but few that can contend as "greatest." Seems like we haven't a very 'great' one for quite a while, actually.
Now, if you want the greatest rock and roll band in the world, that one's easy for me! Can I substitute?
