I replaced "Iggy & the Stooges" with THE RAMONES because they were a solid band throughout their entire career, whereas Iggy is not a "band" in and of himself, and his stint with the Stooges was limited. Besides, THE RAMONES has to go in the Top 10, let's be real . . .

Aw, Ken, I know you can't substitute a UK band for the greatest American Rock and Roll band, that was just my subtle way of providing a hint of who the greatest rock and roll band really is!
I wondered when somebody would mention Grand Funk. I don't see them as the greatest, but they represent sort of a generic, epitome of American rock and roll for a time. Didn't have a whole lot of longevity, though. I just can't seem to pin any one down as THE greatest. Considerations for many: Allman Bros., Aerosmith, Black Crowes, Blue Oyster Cult, Buffalo Springfield, CCR... so many more 'honorable mentions'...

Greatest American Bands (in no particular order):
***Fleetwood Mac (Buckingham/Nicks-era) ***R.E.M. ***Grateful Dead ***Tool ***Talking Heads ***Husker Du ***Sonic Youth ***CCR ***Allman Brothers
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band would win top honors if qualified as a "band", and note that I left out personal favorites like RHP.

Oh, I should have clarified that my list is confined to USA bands. Otherwise The Band would definately be at the top o' the heap.
Where are all the great Mexican rock bands?

Jefferson Airplane sucked.
IMO.
Los Lobos are from California.

Los Lobos are from California. Close enough! But seriously, even though they draw every possible cultural identification with Mexico they can, I guess they are indeed technically eliminated from being Mexican. What about hybrids such as Cream, etc.? Getting hard to keep up with who is from where.

A few random bands, and thoughts on this board so far ... Talking Heads (don't know why I didn't bring them up right away) Husker Du definitely need to be in the discussion ... but I don't think they'll crack my personal top five ... Phil's got a point (aside from the one on his head) that early Jefferson Airplane was pretty damn great, but they took themselves out of contention by morphing into Jefferson Starship, and then into Starship, who recorded the unspeakably awful "We Built This City" which was perhaps the worst recorded offering ever from what was once a major band. Los Lobos definitely deserve mention, but I'm not familiar enough with their work to really make a case for them being in the same league as the Velvets or X ... maybe RocDoc can provide some info? Sonic Youth would be on many a critic's list as well, but it would take some convincing for me to elevate them into this top tier. Can we stretch our definition of "rock" enough to include rap? If so, what about acts like Run D.M.C., the Beastie Boys, or Public Enemy? For that matter, what about some of the other bands to emerge from California's punk(ish) scene ... such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers? And when is someone going to mention Sleater-Kinney? (I guess I just did!) Where is some refugee from the seventies to sing the praises of the Eagles? I personally wouldn't put 'em in this company, but their GH set is the best selling album of all time, so somebody likes 'em! For that matter, where's Ferdman to bring up Phish? Or someone to sing the praises of the Dave Mathews Band? And Strat-0, as to who you could possible be referring to as the greatest rock band ... well, if I could see for miles, I might have to agree that the group in question could take on anyone, anyway, anyhow, anywhere, in my generation or anyone else's. But they'd still come up short to the Clash. I tell ya, Joe, Mick, Paul and Topper were the absolute zenith of rock and roll ... for my ears at any rate. Your mileage may vary ...
