I've decided PEARL JAM is a serious contendor for GREATEST AMERICAN ROCK BAND. They just fit the bill in too many perfect ways to count, and for too many good reasons. Otherwise, I'd give it to the boys from Boston, so I guess I'd place AEROSMITH squeaking by in a close 2nd. And for 3rd Place, I'm going to have to say it's a TIE between TOOL and KORN.
There you have it.

Now I'm down with the Byrds as a primo choice, very underrated. But VU was too 'avante garde' to be considered straight up rock, however, I would practically concede to your wisdom Rit based on the song "Rock'n'Roll" alone. And there's "Sweet Jane", of course.

Sorry Strat-0, this is the board for the greatest North American band ... you'll have to start another for the UK's finest (which we all know was the Clash, followed by the Beatles and the Who). I started this because I honestly don't know the answer. I define rock and roll very broadly -- almost anything that can be traced back to the original influence of Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, etc. qualifies as "rock and roll" in my book. The Band were certainly a rock band, because their musical style (while it deviates from the classic two guitars, bass and drums) was most definitely rooted in the rock tradition, not folk or country. The Beach Boys were a rock and roll band (although I don't think they hold up as one of the greats) because their influences were rock and roll, and they were considered rock in their day. I don't buy the idea that rock has to be over a certain decibel level, or faster than xx beats per minute. Jerry Lee Lewis at his piano doing "Whole Lotta Shaking Going On" rocks harder than any metal band, IMHO. I also tend to define "band" pretty narrowly. I generally don't include acts like Springsteen and the E Streeters or Petty and the Heartbreakers as "bands" in this sense. Those are one guy (or two, in Petty's case) with the musical and lyrical ideas, and a bunch of others who fill them out. When you look at (for example) R.E.M., you've got collective songwriting, distinctive styles on each instrument: in other words, a group that is bigger than the sum of its parts. When you talk about Bruce, you're talking about the ideas that Springsteen and Landau have, and the fact that these guys are really good at bringing them to life. So I tend to put folks like The Boss into the solo artist category, rather than this one. But that's just me ... and defining terms is an inherent part of these discussions (and the fun of it all!). I wasn't even thinking about Pearl Jam or Nirvana when I started this board up, but both definitely deserve consideration. As much as their fans love them, I don't think Korn are anywhere close to the greatest American rock band, and I don't think Aerosmith have ever gotten above "good" and have spent most of their career as a mediocre band. Hell, I think the J.Geils Band were five times the group Aerosmith is. Well, so far this hasn't helped me make up my mind ... I think that the bands who are the top contenders, for me anyway, are these (in absolutely no order): 1. The Velvet Underground 2. R.E.M. 3. X 4. CCR 5. Pearl Jam/Nirvana Then there are more than a few more ... well, more after lunch. Keep the posts coming ... I really do want to hear what you folks think on this matter of pressing national concern!

Who rocks harder? Tool or "Bobby" Dylan? fuckin no contest Thorn's right: Dylan wins this in a landslide. Just listen to Live: 1966. Dylan absolutely destroyed his audience, nothing Tool could ever do can match the sonic assault that Dylan and the Hawks put out on audiences that were at once entranced and repelled by the spectacle before them. Of course, Dylan's not eligible for this list because he's not a BAND!
