I've seen a fair lot of good drummers- Bill Bruford's my all time favourite. Can't think of too many drummers with so many different signature patterns and sounds in his performance- his period with both Yes and King Crimson were stellar.
The last drummer to absolutely made my jaw drop is a fella called Virgil Donati. Recorded by himself under the name On The Virg and together with Tony MacAlpine and Derek Sherinian knocked my socks off in Planet X, which was the gig here in Newcastle where I saw him. An underhand grip and fast as a shark during a drum solo that had everybody gasping for air. Amazing.
The first drummer that took my breath away was Charlie Benante of Anthrax. The human Uzi. Saw them performing with Slayer back in the late eighties and couldn't believe my eyes/ears when they played Gung-Ho. My fave speed metal anthem in the day.
And, due to the recent surfacing of the new Cream-DVD- many kudos to Ginger Baker. God, he looked so old and frail behind that kit but shit, he didn't let up on the skins! Good onya, mate!
As far as jazz drummers go, heard some Buddy Rich but was more impressed with Drum Battle, him versus Gene Krupa! I profess not to be a great lover of the music genre but that particular piece damn good!
So to pick from the bunch...now I really am getting tired of all the digs that Metallica get. Lars Ulrich happens to be a nice guy, part of a band that have bridged metal and mainstream in a way that more people could connect.
Seeing Moon on DVD just showed me that he was a damn good drummer and an even better clown. For entertainment value he couldn't be beat. Which is tough to do in such a physical band that The Who was. My vote goes to him, slightly ahead of Bonham.
