And can Dolly really get away with bundling Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim together as one pick, just because they're now sold as a low-price single disc package? (But obviously it wasn't me who asked this question)It's a good job it's a certain person's birthday tomorrow... (guess how old folks? I can't count past 20, but it's O-O-O-O-O-O-LD!). But to answer the legality of the bundling accusation I personally have only ever known the bundled version - I wouldn't even know which songs were from which album. And if that's no answer then it's tough tic-tacs! I shamelessly confess my preferences are FAR too skewed towards the modern... and I am not one bit ashamed of it! It's what touches me, it's what is relevant and means something to me, and I have made a point of pushing these ideals all through these list making exercises on the boards... I think if its going to be an honest and true representation of listener preferences, we gotta say what we love, irrespective of what we "think" is essential or that we "should" put into a list... Well said Scotsy! Mine is a tad more "as it should be" in places than if I had more time to think (and less awful exam test papers to mark). But I did manage to include a few personal modern favourites (Arcade Fire, Pulp, Interpol, Emiliana Torrini etc) that I probably wouldn't put on an objective list (save for Funeral and TOTBL of course!). Anyway, point is the list should be what YOU feel it should be, and not what the book says it should be - or that would be pretty dull eh? I love seeing other people's lists and seeing the quirky little picks that stand out from all the usuals. Whoa, that was more said in one post than I've said in a year.

But at the same time, I'm not going to make a "Greatest Books Ever" list and put Stephen King on it. That's just complete bullshit. I'm not one to believe that art is purely subjective. I'm not one to believe that my 25 favorite albums are the "greatest" because that's the way I feel, and we all have our own opinions.
It's a cyclical argument, but I will always fall to the side that says that, no, fucking Blink 182 is NOT better than The Clash, I don't care how much you fucking love them, if you really think that it is a FACT that you are fucking WRONG.
On the other hand, I really like Jesus' debate of whether or not we should look at the new stuff as "influenced by" or "improved upon." That really got me to thinking.

any vote for the The Clash, whether US or UK (which we all know is better)
Eh? The UK version? Are you sure Mr Holzman? No love for White Man in Hammersmith Palais? The UK is far poorer for its omission. It makes the album for me.
Debate!

I don't think that anyone in this community would even consider for a moment putting Blink 182 or Stephen King novels onto a greatest list...
Not sure if your post was in answer to mine Luke, but my argument wasn't so much that a greatest list should be merely subjective, just that I don't think there is any point in creating a list that puts Dark Side of the Moon (for example) in your top 10 because you know that it should really be in there. (edit - and I just noticed that it's Melon's top album - no offence - coincidence!)
But then I'm in the fortunate position of [knowing/i] that my number 1 pick really is the number greatest rock & roll album of all time ;D

The UK is far poorer for its omission. It makes the album for me. Debate! I LOVE White Man in Hammersmith Palais (might be the band's finest moment, all in all) and Complete Control, and I Fought the Law ... but they're not part of The Clash. To me, those are later singles, which should be heard as such. What I love about the UK issue is the way it feels like one piece -- we went into a studio and came out with this. The US version feels slapped together, in contrast. So while I think that the US may have the better songs, the UK release is the better album. My humble opinion anyway ...

I was going to say:
'Well, I love reading peoples' lists, actually, informed peoples' lists but I despise doing lists of my own...'
but reading the ones you guys put up makes me want to make one of my own now. Shit.
~
That Emiliana Torrini that Dolly put up stuck out for me enough that I looked it up on AMG and it definitely sounds like one to find. Well then besides her new one which I think reviews even better...yeah, write up something like this and I'm NOT going to bite?
Torrini's beautiful vocals match the translucence of Beth Orton and Kate Bush and the undying passion of Björk. Her debut Love in the Time of Science is a shimmering delight of gossamer lyrics and swooning instrumental imagery.
Right.
~
Also nice to see the inclusion of Abbey Road on so many lists and then Mad Dogs And Englishmen is also extrrrremely deserving...
Later then.

You know, luke, in the old days, I spent the better time of a year arguing with louee that, because artistic subjectivity is a bullshit, cowardly defense of poor taste (IMO), Britney Spears is not, in fact, the greatest artist ever. I tend to agree with you...which is not to say that you can't make an argument for a lot of things actually belonging in the top 25.

If the only thing you are familiar with are the likes of Hillary Duff, Jessica Simpson and all those Teen Pop sugar twats...
Britney Spears may very well be the "greatest artist ever" ...
HÉ! I do miss Louee !!

I did not see other peoples lists so far..this is my first draft. Apologies to Ken--the Clash does not show up. This is futile and impossible.
1. The Who-Whos Next (followed closely by BY NUMBERS) 2. Beach Boys-Pet Sounds (followed closely by TODAY, SURFS UP and WILD HONEY) 3. Guided by Voices-Bee Thousand (cmon! I had to pick one!) 4. Big Star-Radio City (ALL BIG STAR!) 5. Aztec Camera-High Land Hard Rain (I cannot tell you how many copies of this I have bought) 6. Yes-Close to the Edge 7. Sonic Youth-Daydream Nation 8. Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band -Trout Mask Replica 9. Cure-Pornography 10. Leonard Cohen-The Songs of Leonard Cohen 11. Cocteau Twins-Heaven or Las Vegas 12. ANYTHING by the Verlaines/New Concepts in Sound Recording-Pan Am 13. Pixies-Surfer Rosa 14. Psychadelic Furs-Talk Talk Talk 15. My Bloody Valentine-Loveless 16. Byrds-Ballad of Easy Rider 17. XTC-The Big Express (you cannot dismiss this album for its drum sound! The songs are pretty damn good! XTC should go unplugged with them!) 18. Clean-Vehicle 19. Michael Nesmith-Loose Salute 20. Randy Newman-12 Songs 21. Jack Bruce-Songs for a Tailor 22. Genesis-Foxtrot 23. The Jam-In the City 24. Wilco-Summerteeth 25. The Kinks-Kronikles (if this cant count --SOMETHING ELSE)

Zombies Odessy and Oracle! Split Enz MENTAL NOTES! I will be amending this list. I am not including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, Clash, Stones, Pink Floyd, and as a matter of fact, Guided By Voices on the next list--cos their entire discographies cannot be nitpicked in a sane manner. I forgot Marshall Crenshaw and Leo Kottke.
