glen, please don't be guilted out of putting GBV on your list. I'll have them in the top 10 on mine, probably.

Closer or Pornography? Hmm, they're probably my favourite albums by each artist, though only 2 days ago I put Unknown Pleasures and Disintegration in my top 25 instead. That speaks volumes about my fickle nature, possibly. Today I declare Pornography to be the best of the lot, since it's just got a little more bile and acid about it and all those tom fills... but then, that could be describing Closer too, and Curtis' misery has the ultimate stamp of authenticity, whereas Fat Bob is possibly a bit of a pseudo-angst head. That's my vote.

Fat Bob made such a depressing album as the world has never known. I listened to it two nights ago, at bedtime natrually enough, and i thought it was blacker than bleak. or bleaker than black.
but yeah, Closer is something else alltogether.
i happen to prefer Pornography as an album listening experience though.

Fat Bob definitely set out to make as mellodramatic a piece of pop music as possible.
Closer is more overtly dark though. There are some downright sonicaly "jolly' moments on there ('Colony", "Means to an End") which go against the oppressive lyrics, which make them all the more disturbing.

Didn't Smith always say that he never made another album like Pornography because to have done so would have been to end up like Curtis? One of my favorite posts in the history of all these boards came from JACkory, when we were discussing who the "real deal" was out of Ian Curtis and Morrissey. The post ended with something like, "One of them hung himself, and the other ended up pursuing a mediocre solo career."

Hey Glen,
I remember you telling me once that Revolver would be in your top 10 and October would be in the early 20's of your list. But of course you probably have a thousand more albums to pick from than me. Seems like you've heard most everything.

Oh well, I just now read that post where you said you wouldn't be including any Beatles.

25. Dopes To Infinity – Monster Magnet
"I went to a death metal concert. It was a band called Monster Magnet. They were heeeaaavy boy. The lead singer had on leather pants and no shirt, and he was playing a flying V guitar. And he said, 'How many of you feel like human beings tonight?' And then he said,'How many of you feel like animals?' And everybody cheered. But I cheered after the human beings part because I didn't know there was a second part to the question. I said,' Yes I do feel like a human. I do not feel like a treeeee.' "

More Mitch:
"I haven't slept for ten days because that would be too long."
"I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it."
"A severed foot is the ultimate stocking stuffer."
"If you had a friend who was a tighrope walker and you were walking down the sidewalk and he fell, that would be COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE."

Actually, it's Hedgburg, I believe. No, it's Hedberg. He's an all time favorite of mine. Glad I got to see him before he croaked (opened for Dave Attell and Lewis Black--man, that was sweet).

My favorite Mitch Hedberg (paraphrased):
"A banana is not like a traffic signal. On a traffic signal, red means stop, green means go, and yellow means slow down. On a banana, yellow means go, green means hold on, and red means, where the fuck did you get that banana at?"
