This board is nothing other than an attempt to pick out which Elliot Smith album to start off with. As of right now, I'm only familiar with a handful of his songs, "Needle In the Hay" and "Unnamed 3" being my favorites. Seems like when I posed the question of which album to buy first, everyone picked something different. Maybe this poll will make up me mind. So c'mawn. Give Melon a little help here.

Personally, I would have to go with the self titled one on Kill Rock Stars. In the beginning of his full band era I was a little hard on him for sounding much more like the Beatles than like himself. In my opinion his first two records are his pinnacle because he had a defining voice that had yet to be aped or matched.

I went with X/O, but if I'd been given the option for From a Basement on a Hill I might have considered that one.

Sorry Melon, I can't help you out with this. I've only heard a couple of track by the guy, and none of 'em really resonated with me. I'd go with X/O, just because Rocky recommended it, and we tend to have pretty similar tastes.

Either/Or has Las Angeles which is the best song he ever wrote... it also happens to be his best album. Start there.

Melonious-I voted Roman Candle because, for me--it is the best, most raw, Elliot Smith album. On this album its all Elliot Smith and the songs are one hundred times better. More immediate.
