OK guys, now that the results from the 25 Greatest Albums survey have (finally) been tallied (much thanks to Melon for taking on this thankless task), it's time to jump back into a new exercise in list making. While the last time around we were talking about albums, this time its singles -- not songs, but rather singles.
So here are the ground rules. First, in order for your vote to count, the song has to have been formally released as a single, just being played on the radio isn't enough. I realize that not all radio songs have "singles" associated with them anymore, so there's an alternative available for more recent tracks. If it charted in the Hot 100 in Billboard, or in a comparable publication in another recognized country, then it's a single. Recognized countries for chart purposes include all of western Europe, the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
I want this to be perfectly clear: if the song was released as a single (whether on 45 "back in the day," or as the lead track on a cd single more recently) it does NOT have to have "charted" in order to be eligible. The chart rule only comes into effect if there's some song that didn't have a physical single release, but was none the less popular enough on the radio (or by other measure) to wind up on the country's pop chart.
Second rule, this is still the Greatest Singles in Rock and Roll. You basically get to decide what qualifies as "rock and roll" but if there's a big genre stretch, I get the final veto or approval. I don't think this will be a problem for us, but it always bears mentioning. FWIW, I also get final say on whether a track qualifies as a single, should that become a problem.
Third, you get to pick 50, yes that's right FIFTY, singles. And you've got two weeks to do it in ... unless we need more time, in which case I'll make an appropriate extension. Melon has once again graciously agreed to do the grunt work of totalling the submissions, so I expect that the results will be posted in a very timely fashion. But it's still my survey, and so I reserve all the rights associated with such a lofty position (meaning I get to bitch and moan whenever someone nominates a Doors single other than Break on Through).
I think this should be a very interesting survey ... as some of our established favorites aren't exactly noted for releasing huge singles. It's definitely an open question as to how much concensus there's going to be on this one.
So start those keyboards clacking ... Melon and I are anxiously awaiting your thoughts ...
