Not sure about Rock and Roll, but pretty sure Sweet Jane was - at least, according to a couple of the lists I've referenced today.
And it'll probably make my list... although it'll be the Cowboy Junkies version.

I'd pick the Mott The Hoople version, but don't know if that was a single yet either.

Strat -- I didn't mean to make people do a bunch of work to figure out if a song qualifies as a single. This is more to resolve disputes, if any should arise. Mainly, I just want to make it clear that this is not the same as a "greatest songs in rock and roll" survey. So I don't expect to see "Heroin" on people's lists (unless you can substantiate that entry, Rocky I'm talking to you here!), etc. Oh, I can sneak "Heroin" into this discussion, don't you worry about that.... Unfortunately, not the original Velvet Underground version. However, Billy Idol released his cover as a single in 1993. And no, I'm not really going to try to make a case that Billy Idol's cover of "Heroin" is the greatest single of all time. Although maybe I should, just for the sake of argument.

And there you have the major problem with the 90s through today. Most of the stuff that makes it to the radio is "the worst song on the album."

I'm pretty sure I didn't see "Pushit" on Top of the Pops. ekul has wisdom beyond his tender years.

Oh I agree that the glory days of the rock and roll single are long gone, but that doesn't make the list any less interesting. There are plenty of great tracks to choose from. But again, don't forget about the other venue to become a modern "single." If there's a video of the tune that has gotten play on one of the video music channels (obviously not MTV, since they don't play music any more than ABC does, maybe less!), it's a "single" for our purposes. My thinking for this exception is this: videos are ultimately made as promos for the album, whether that album is on cd, vinyl, cassette, or zeros and ones downloaded from the internet. This is the same purpose that singles traditionally served: to advertise the album and/or the artist in hopes that people would buy more merchandise and/or go see the performer live. Since they serve the same purpose and use the same basic format (one song), it seems fair to consider them the same thing for this survey. So there are a bunch of Radiohead songs that will qualify, etc., even if they never were played on the radio. And I believe that there are still indie labels that release "singles" by their artists, even if they don't get the notice that something like the new Jennifer Lopez cut might.

"Love Will Tear us Apart". Yep, that's one that I expect will do very well on this survey. Hell, it just might wind up winning the whole thing. Even the people who aren't wild about Joy Division (myself included) have to admit that Love Will Tear Us Apart is one of the most powerful singles ever released. Who is that in your avatar, R.i.t.? She's got some killer legs, or so it seems from this resolution ...

she's a nameless faceless model. the full blown pic is sexy enough.. you can see the full blown pic if you right click on the image and see "view image"... well, that's what you would do if you were using Firefox.. for the IE users, you'll figure it out.

As I use only Macintosh computers, I can't "right click" at all! But "ctrl click" gives me the option to open image in a new window and ... damn! Looks even better with more pixels in the game.

yeah, its a hot pic.. though i'm not keeping it for much longer. the Nellie mckay pic on the Rockstars picture board is hot enough.
New Order surely have to have an entry or two in the top singles of all time... what about "Blue Monday"? or "Temptation" or "True Faith"?

Well, the only thing I do know is that the "Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane" single will be my number 1.

Ken, is it safe to say that anything that was released as a music video is a single? "Pyramid Song", for instance.
