I am pretty sure the Arcade Fire sucks balls,
The best bands on Earth are Radiohead and TOOL, and I give the edge to Radiohead, simply because they release stuff. Broken Social Scene is my favorite band at the moment, though. and have been since their new album solidified their already solid position on my mind. I don't know if that makes them the best band in the world, though. My feelings on Radiohead and TOOL are settled beyond the strength of an album or two. But should BSS drop another album like the previous two, their supremacy will be without question.

There is no such thing as "The Best Band On Earth" !
Objectively or subjectively ...

aw c'mon Phil....there's 4[/b] choices!
The comment "I give the edge to Radiohead, simply because they release stuff" is priceless! Who knows, with Perfect Circle's "Emotive" somewhat tanking, maybe this will be the year of the Tool.....

I went with Radiohead becuase, why the hell not? I'm pretty sure ken's right about the Arcade Fire...they just have "not great" written alll over them and look at ken's avatar. You can't argue with that...you ought to see him dress up like superman. If each band were a sign they'd say...
Arcade Fire- (in basic type font) Hey, we ain't bad but we're certainly not great Tool- (is some font that moves somehow even though it's on paper or cardboard or someother sign material) Hey, man we're just fuckin' with you and our drummer kicks ass BSS- (writen in 27 different handwritings in crayon) Your house is on fire. Ice lakes and twelve year girls have no chance against your lie Radiohead- (written with one of those pens with a blinlking light on it) Don't you think. My floor is alone and when it comes, I'll hold out.
Those pens with blinking lights are pretty cool, so Radiohead wins...that's how I see it anyway.

by your same reasoning, i'd still say BSS wins, because let's face it: your house is still on fire.

I think Stars are the Best Band On Earth right now but that's just me.
Considering their rampant creativity, killer live show and the fact that they have already recorded one album, You Forgot It In People, that sits on a plane with any pantheon-dwelling rock opus you care to mention, BSS is absolutely in contention here. But this title is really a question of capturing the zeitgeist, isn't it? Has BSS captured the collective imagination?
I think that to the extent that any one band can do that in our niche-filled, too many bands, 21st century community of rock communities, they have. Run a search for them in technorati and check how current your results are – chances are someone's posted to her blog about them in the last hour. In the run-up to Broken Social Scene it would have been in the last 4 minutes. If BSS had been unreservedly to OK Computer what YFIIP was to The Bends, there would be no question whatsoever.
As for the Arcade Fire, with one album and – to use an overused word – what is a transcendent live show, they've placed themselves in the substantially the same position Radiohead was in between The Bends and OK Computer (albeit probably shifting fewer 'units' in the process, which is just the way it is now). I mean they have the Bowies and Byrnes of the world hanging on their next move, along with all the rest of us. In commercial terms they could probably become the next U2, if that's what they want. I love them dearly but I have to say, I fear a little for them. It's been almost too much too soon. There's not a whole lot of room for them to grow and evolve as a band – their image is set, they're to produce another Funeral and if they don't deliver, well they were just a one hit wonder anyway.
Radiohead – The last band to unequivocally hold this title. Feels to me like they reliquished it, largely of their own accord, somewhere around 2003-2004. It's always hard to put your finger on these things but I think Hail to the Thief and the subsequent tour needed to lodge higher in our collective imaginations for them to maintain it. No question they're still a major band – you look forward to their next one with anticipation – but there is a sense now that they are just another of the big acts in the world. IMHO.
TOOL – bit of a blind spot for me. I've tried to get into a couple of their records but they've never done much for me. So my vote on this poll goes to BSS.

that was illuminating. with one caveat though.. I can't see Arcade Fire positioning themselves as the next Radiohead.. That requires a whole lot of hubris and self-loathing. Which Arcade Fire just ain't. They're Canadian, afterall.
your reading of where BSS are right now was totally spot on.

Yeah, I don't mean they want to be Radiohead, though. I'm saying they occupy a similar place on the spectrum.

The only thing stopping me from insisting on the Arcade Fire is that one album and one EP are not enough to base a claim for best band in the world on. Otherwise, I'd be all about it. So I'll go with Wilco or the White Stripes. Bah, quit being right, Sigman. At least until the new Radiohead record comes out.

Can we please not have the White Stripes mentioned anywhere on this thread until they release anything better than an ep's worth of solid songs at once. Thanks.

Still though, whether they suck or not, The Arcade Fire don't quite have the cred for this title yet imo.

Yeah, I just put them down because I didn't want to be too blatantly obvious that I created this thread because I was listening to Broken Social Scene on my way home while I was trashed on Wild Turkey and felt like violently proclaiming that they were better than Tool or Radiohead.
So seriously, this thread is a bit of a joke. Shame, too, because with more choices, it has potential.

Assuming the Mouse are still around, I'd probably pick them as best band on earth, even with the weak last album. Nine Inch Nails is certainly worth being on the poll, but I'm not sure if they're still "the best." Probably should have put Korn to humor Thorn (I put Radiohead to humor the rest of you, why not Korn for him?). And, uh. Wilco, definitely.

Aye, s(t)olid... name 3 WS songs that transcend that stripped down bluesy rock vibe and touch real greatness. Something more than 'very good'. Go on. Just three.
