I saw Skvor and others talking about which of these were better over on the Modest Mouse board. So I figured we could put it up to a vote. Although I love both albums, Doolittle wins by a mile for me. The reason: I can't think of many other albums this solid. 15 excellent tracks. Not a lame one, or even a mediocre one, at that. C'mon Doolittle, pull it off!

It's Doolittle, but all four of their albums are damn near perfect. The EP is pretty damn good too.

I gave it to Doolittle simply becuase it's accessablity gives it slight edge of Surfer Rosa, two albums that, for the initiated, are both perfect.

Truth be told, I probably listen to Bossanova more than any of the rest of them, but I certainly can't make a case for it being better than Surfer Rosa or Doolittle.

Surfer Rosa.
Two absolutely top albums though. There's hardly room to squeeze a gnat's chuff between 'em.
Incidentally, both of these albums piss all over Nevermind. We're all agreed on that, right?

Doolittle is great in its studied aggression but I prefer the horniness of Surfer Rosa! Encanta!

Surfer Rosa. Two absolutely top albums though. There's hardly room to squeeze a gnat's chuff between 'em. Incidentally, both of these albums piss all over Nevermind. We're all agreed on that, right? And everything else released in the 90s. But especially Nevermind. And sorry, thorns, I go with Doolittle. I'm sure all it'd take is a Surfer Rosa kick to change my mind, but for the last couple years, it's definitely been Doolittle. The most amazing thing about all their albums, though, is that they haven't aged at all. Not a single fucking day. Most people still think that "Where is my Mind?" was some track some obscure band recorded for the Fight Club soundtrack. Contemporaries like My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth have albums that sound like they were produced in the 80s (which isn't a bad thing by any means), but it would be IMPOSSIBLE to place any of the Pixies albums on a timeline if you didn't know what you were listening to. Furthermore, take Modest Mouse. Other than Nirvana, they're perhaps the biggest band heavily influenced by the Pixies. Their first two albums actually sound more dated than Surfer Rosa. This is fucking amazing to me. What I like most about Doolittle is that it's the one band from those old 80s indies icons that shuts up the likes of critics who find Sonic Youth to drone on or the Jesus and Mary Chain to be a bunch of noise. It's an album that only the most tone deaf of rock fans wouldn't love on first listen. And then it sticks. You can't even say that about Crooked Rain Crooked Rain. The Pixies really stand out above all their peers here, and everyone else that came after by default.

this was the toughest yet. Gave it to SR, but it's still not clear cut.

Come one come on. We all know it's Doolittle. Stop being retarded. I shouldn't have winked. I really mean that. Retards. And Luke, I know you didn't mean that about Crooked Rain. That one still smarts as much as, if not more than, Doolittle. Actually, I'll concede that they're pretty evenly matched as far as the previous and following albums go by both bands.

Oh I love Crooked Rain. I pointed it out because Doolittle and Crooked Rain are the be-all, end-all of indie pop (sounding) albums, and Crooked Rain doesn't catch your ear half as fast as Doolittle on first listen. So while Crooked Rain is right there in longevity, it can't hold up on first listen. Or something.

As long as we can agree that Doolittle kicks the crap out of Surfer Rosa... ...which, as established, we all know is true.
