Reckoning for me as well. i'm good with REM up until Out of Time, and then just lost interest after that. even Automatic I don't care for that much. some nice songs, but as a whole, just "meh". and if i never have to hear man on the Moon again, it will be no huge loss.
yes, the Fleshtones were awesome. saw them once at the Rat in Boston, just a terrific live show.

Jac, I actually spoke with Sara Romweber. not much of a conversation, and i can't recall much of what may have been said, she was kind of tiny and quiet. But after seeing them with REM, one of my friends was hitting on her after the show, so i wandered on over to butt my way in.
man, i had a crush on her, what a sweetie.

if i never have to hear man on the Moon again, it will be no huge loss. Yes, indeed. Songs like "Man on the Moon", "Ignoreland" and "Drive" are what put me off AFTP, plus it just seems like Stipe's voice mutates into "whine" at about this point in their career and it never did gravitate back to it's original captivating mumbled-glossolalia-spouting warmth.

I love Ignoreland. maybe my fave track off Automatic. probably just because, in a period where REM wwere becoming increasing mid-tempo, almost easy listening type, it just rocked. not in a phony, "we're gonna really rock on this album" like Monster was, but just a band slamming out a big brash slab of rock.
and yeah, the stuff like Drive is what really kills Automatic for me. but Nightswimming and Everybody Hurts are just stellar.

my fave REM albums, of what i have:
Reckoning Murmur Lifes Rich Pageant Chronic Town Fables of the Reconstruction Document Green Out of Time Automatic for the People Dead letter Office Monster
as this order indicates, loved the eralier REM, increasing loss of interest with each release.

But after seeing them with REM, one of my friends was hitting on her after the show, so i wandered on over to butt my way in. man, i had a crush on her, what a sweetie. That's really cool. I bet she got "hit on" a lot, because she WAS a "sweetie", and had such an original look, kind of waifish but with a hint of a wild streak lurking. Did you ever hear the band she hooked up with after her departure from Let's Active, Snatches of Pink? They put out two albums that I know of, a self-titled debut and Dead Men...both are REALLY good, high energy rock and roll records, but Dead Men is probably the better (even though the song "Time Done Gone" on the debut is probably my favorite of theirs). I just checked Amazon.com and NEITHER of these albums are even in their database, so it's a good chance they are out-of-print and very difficult to find (glad I still have a cassette of the debut, alas, my copy of Dead Men was on vinyl and went the way of all my other vinyl)... However, it would appear that SoP have been fairly prolific since then, as I see three other CDs that I'd never even heard of... And that means my wishlist needs to be updated... Acch...upon further investigation it would appear that Sara Romweber left SoP at some point. Oh well, Michael Rank held his own with that band, and I'd still like to hear what they put out after that second album... Snatches of Pink Bent with Pray(This pic is kinda small, but you can see that Romweber was still with them when it was released...no mistaking that hair on the person to the far right) Snatches of Pink StagSnatches of Pink Hyena(Apparently Michael Rank is now a member of a group called Marat...anyone heard of them?)

i've got one of them, but not sure of the title. more of an EP than a full album, might've been the self-titled. never listened to it much.

did a quick google search, and it appers that the Snatches of Pink that you and I know are now known as Clarissa. same three members, and still making music today. and as this blurry pic seems to indicate, Sara still looks like she may be a cutie.

from that pic, she's certainly aged well. and still the same hairstyle, but with just a little less teasing.

and yeah, the stuff like Drive is what really kills Automatic for me. but Nightswimming and Everybody Hurts are just stellar. It's quite the opposite for me. I still consider 'Drive' the best song they ever recorded. It's 'Everybody Hurts' that I can't stand to listen to. It just seems to drag on forever. Same thing with 'Losing My Religion'. Granted, they're both great songs but they just got so overplayed back then that I got totally sick of them. btw, 'Monster' IMO is one of their worst albums. Even 'Bang & Blame's' verse riff is a rip-off of their very own 'Losing My Religion'... only with a really bland chorus. 'What's the Frequency Kenneth' is great though. Probably the only truly memorable [and original] moment on that album.
