Really hard to pick between Check Your Head and Ill Communication but I went with Ill. Their other albums don't even come close to those 2 IMO.

It's actually between Check Your Head and Paul's Boutique....but CYH just pulls ahead, both are brilliant.

Voted for Ill Communication.
IMO the boys are hitting on all cylinders here as the rap songs and instrumentals are damn near perfect. Overall, I think this is their most accessible, and complete albums, and best represents the Beastie Boys.
Personally, I think Paul's Boutique, CYH, Ill Comm, and Hello Nasty are all stellar albums and among the best ever released into pop culture.

What I REEEEAAAAAALLLY don't understand is how To the 5 Buroughs got 5 frickin' stars while Ill got 4 and Check Your Head 3 and 1/2. That makes no sense at all. Rolling Stone Mag is spot on from time to time, but now and then they're full of shit. Just look at how they treated the best band of the 90s: Blind Melon.

Good point. TT5B isn't a bad album by any means, but it's no 5 star album either; I think 3 and 1/2 stars is more appropriate ranking. Paul's, CYH, and ILL are all 4 and 1/2 star albums, and Hello is a 4 star album IMO.

Damn Hello Nasty is a nice album. Don't know when the last time anyone here gave it a listen, but for me it's been about 2 years....This album is on point, and has so many things going on during each song....lots of subtle layers that make for great repeated listens.

Alright, so I've been listening to some Beasties lately in anticipation of the new album, and they've blown my mind again!!
First, I went and listened to 'Hello Nasty' to get some clues for the new album. Mike D said "don't expect 'In Sounds From the Way Out' part 2." So I listened to the following songs w/ instruments from Nasty: Song For the Man, Sneakin' Out of the Hospital, Song For Junior, I Don't Know, Remote Control, Picture This, and Instant Death.
For those of you who do not know these songs, over looked them, think they sucked when you heard them back in 1998, go listen!
"Remote Control" - this song is like some new school punk fusion and like many of the songs w/ instruments, MCA - Adam Yauch - on bass is the highlight. He uses an ultra fuzzy/distorted effect on top of a sweet riff. The drumming - performed by a session guy who joins them when Mike D sings - is very tight, with cool fills. There's also lots of strange effects, and a really trippy, hip-hop style psychedelic break down in the middle. It's a great song, and honestly, I'm kinda surprised that this kind of sound hasn't been explored a bit more.
"Song For The Man" - this may be my favorite Beastie Boys song. Money Mark - keyboardist/pianist since check your head, and is all over the new album - owns this song. Ad Rock does the singing, and Mike D is on the drums - his style is much more groove based and laid-back than the session guys. And, rumor has it that Mike D is money on the drums on 'The Mix Up' - Anyway, after about a minute and a half this song morphs into a lovely piano/organ based jam - It kinda reminds me as if the Beach Boys met the Doors - and don't hate the song just cause I compared it to the Doors.
"Song For Junior" - well this one came out of left field! This is a full on Latin Jam, with the flute! This also hit about a year and a half before the Latin craze swept through the States. This is a very laid back song, and certainly goes places the Beasties never went before.
"Picture This" - another chill laid back song with a female guest vocalist - I think it's the gal from Luscious Jackson - This is another one of my favorites on the album! The vocals fit perfectly with the smooth, soothing sounds.
"Sneakin' Out of the Hospital" - this one has no vocals, but enter Mix Master Mike. This is a hybrid song of live instrumentation with scratching by the DJ. As is the case with at least half of Hello Nasty, this is a very chill song. It comes at a perfect time on the album, right after "Intergalactic" and kinda sets the tone the rest of the way through. Mix Master really shines towards the end of this number.
"I Don't Know" - A very surprising acoustic soft ballad with MCA opening up, and Ad Rock on the acoustic guitar. There's some other layers like shakers and whatnot, but this is a very stripped down song.
"Instant Death" - this is the album closer, and works well to wrap things up. It starts out chill, and kinda like a lullaby. Ad Rock sings and pretty much mumbles his way through the song. Then, when he sings the words "Instant Death" the song opens up in a kinda dark way with a helicopter style sample and some heavy/dronie beats.
All in all, I believe there is no way that if I played these songs to folks who don't know the Beastie Boys, that they would guess these tunes are indeed by them! Hello Nasty is an amazing collection of songs. In a way, it's a very disjointed album because for all of the chill instrumental numbers, there are super sonic, high energy hip-hop songs. It's a very yin and yang style album. I think a lot of folks perhaps wrote it off because of that, but IMHO, it's aged very nicely, like 'Paul's Boutique'.

I had to vote for "Check Your Head" as I think that record is their pinnacle of their genius.

Although I feel skvor is perfectly correct I voted for Paul's Boutique for one reason and one reason only. Looking down the barrel of a gun son of a gun son of a bitch getting paid getting rich!

I put this over in the YSI thread, but go no response, so I'm putting it here. I'm curious to hear some feed back... www.sendspace.com/file/49x47oAlso, go to www.beastieboys.com for 'Off The Grid" it's a vid of the boys playing that song in the studio.
