"When you're talking about Armstrong, you're talking about the guy who pretty much invented and defined the primary method of playing (if not THE then certainly one of) the signature instruments of the genre, no small feat. The very notion of how to play what we all recognize as a jazz solo comes largely from what Armstrong did, and then popularized."
This statement is a yes and no for me. There's been years of conjecture that he did nothing but steal from Billy Bolden. In fact, many people claim that the very essence of jazz come's from Bolden's tone, whether through myth or not, apparently that guy was the shit.

Buddy Bolden was Louie Armstrong's mentor, so of course he learned from AND owes a huge debt to the man.
But so what, Armstrong gets my vote here...and I had to check if this was one that I never voted on. Since this is a very familiar convo...

Buddy Bolden was probably the biggest shit ever in Jazz, but from what I can gather reading the history, Armstrong will always be the shit. He had one of the craziest tones I've ever heard and sooooo tasteful.

Bottom line - Louie Armstrong was like Jimi Hendrix gone through the 'Time Tunnel'(tm) and landed in 19-and-fucking-18 and handed a goddamned trumpet...
