We all have 'em in our collections, those albums we both love and are frustrated by, where we say "if they'd just cut out these tracks ... or changed the playlist ..." Some prime contenders here are Sandinista!, The Beatles (The White Album), almost anything the Red Hot Chili Peppers have done in the last 16 years, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness ... and so on. So here's your chance to "fix" that sprawling mess of a record you've always wanted to trim back. Go ahead, cut and splice to your heart's content. Just don't expect every one to agree with your decision.

One that comes to mind for me is Binaural by Pearl Jam. Not only would a resequence it, but I'd cut some songs and then put some of the b-sides recorded for 'binaural' from 'Lost Dogs' on it...for example..
1. Breakerfall 2. God's Dice 3. Grievance 4. Sad 5. Light Years 6. Hitchhiker 7. Insignificance 8. Rival 9. Education 10. Fatal 11. Other Side 12. Sleight Of Hand 13. Parting Ways ("Soon Forget" as a hidden track)

Sandinista! is one of my favorite albums. I love the whole sprawling mess ... I even listen to Mensforth Hill once in a while. But still there are days when I wish it had been a little more compact, a little tidier, a little more like this ... Side One: Up In Heaven (Not Only Here) The Magnificient Seven Ivan Meets G.I. Joe Charlie Don't Surf The Leader Something About England Side Two: Rebel Waltz Midnight Log Corner Soul If Music Could Talk Somebody Got Murdered One More Time One More Dub Side Three: Police On My Back The Equaliser The Call Up Kingston Advice Washington Bullets Broadway Side Four: Hitsville UK The Crooked Beat Let's Go Crazy Living In Fame The Sound of Sinners The Street Parade

^^^^ Interesting...I think Magnificent 7 is a money opener; I'd leave that in place.
What do you think of my alt. Binaural?

Another guy on RS suggested a long time ago that Up In Heaven (Not Only Here) would have made a much more accesible opener. He thought that The Magnificent Seven put a lot of people off the album right away, because it was so radically different (remember, this came out in 1981! rap wasn't anywhere near mainstream yet, and certainly nowhere near the punk audience the Clash had). I've used Up In Heaven to open several Clash samplers I've put together for people, and they always like it, so I've kind of stuck with it as an easier entre into Sandinista! I can see messing with Binaural, but I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of Lost Dogs in general, and love Binaural as it sits ... so I'll have to go back and listen to those additions before I can weigh in on it definitively. But right now I'm listening to my "remix" of Sandinista! ... I love these songs, in any order. BTW, The Equaliser is one of my favorite tracks on the album. I love all the dub elements, and Joe's vocal ... "No gang boss, NO! We don't want the whip!" Great moody late night music ... like a lot of this record.

My Combat Rock:
1. Know Your Rights 2. Car Jamming (I kinda like this one) 3. Should I Stay Or Should I Go 4. Rock The Casbah 5. Overpowered By Funk (kinda like this too) 6. Sean Flynn 7. Atom Tan 8. Inoculated City 9. Straight To Hell
I think those 9 songs would make Combat Rock a more solid album. Still nowhere near the first three, but still much better. --------
So Ken, no love for Lost Dogs? Surprising since you seem to like Binaural...I think those b-sides (Sad, Hitchhiker, Education, Otherside, and Fatal) are what helps make Lost Dogs such a good album -- especially Fatal and Sad. Both of those songs should have made Binaural. If anything, put those two songs in, and axe "Evacuation" and "Thin Air" and Binaural is a solid 4 star album.

I'd edit Combat Rock to an EP:
1. Know Your Rights 2. Should I Stay Or Should I Go 3. Rock The Casbah 4. Straight To Hell 5. Atom Tan 6. Sean Flynn 7. Inculated City

I need to listen more closely to Lost Dogs. I bought it right away when it came out, and promptly went into PJ OD. I think I've listened to the whole thing like twice. It just struck me as having too much jam-band vibe, or something, when it came out ... just put me off it.
This afternoon I'm gonna pull up Binaural, along with those cuts you suggested, and give it another listen. Other than the Avacado Album, I haven't been listening to much PJ lately. Be interesting to give this a spin with fresh ears.
Gonna go get lunch here in a few minutes ... even my "edit" of Sandinista! runs over an hour and half! There's just so much good stuff on here ... personally, I think you and Rocky are smoking crack when you say that they should've cut it down to a single LP. That's just crazy talk!

...I'd probably resequence Straight To Hell at the end as well...

^^^ Yeah, "Straight To Hell" makes for a good closer....
Ken, maybe w/ more listens I'll open up to 'Sandinista' more, but as it stands now, I just can't get into those dub songs. I think all of them are pretty bad.
I think you may be pleasantly surprised by a re-edit of 'Binaural'....You may not like "Hitchhiker" - most people I know don't, but I think you may like "Otherside", "Fatal", "Education", and "Sad". The latter could've been a single and possibly a hit...

HOUSES OF THE HOLY by Led Zeppelin. Side 2 IS side one.
10,000 Maniacs-Wishing Chair-Find the cassette. That is the correct tracklist. I picked up the CD a couple of weeks ago and it was JACKED. The sequencing was fucked.
I would never edit an album to an EP. Give me the bullshit too. Let me decide because apparently the artists AND the record company were too doped up and too money hungry to give a shit about the people spending their hard earned. Sometimes the filler is crazy! And good.....
If I were a member of the Clash while recording Cut the Crap I would be ashamed of myself. Ashamed that I was taking money from people for crap they couldve written on their own. By the same token, I dont have a recorded album for a major label so I cant really talk...Thats why music critics piss me off sometimes. The only thing they are good for is to see if such and such album has come out. I want a real reality show--THE SECRET LIFE OF THE ROCK CRITIC. If Stephen Thomas Earlywhine can make a LIVING from reviewing albums (no disrespect intended--thats what I have always wanted to do--im jealous--that and save peoples lives--i think I would rather be a doctor) then any of us can. Trying to distill and explain the way music feels and sounds with 26 letters is crazy.
Im off the topic. I would totally resequence WHOS NEXT to the cassette version I bought when I was 16 in 91.

Combat Rock would make a good EP, I like that resequencing.
But Sandinista!...no changes. The point of it is thats big, sprawling, hit n miss. Love it.

Resequencing Sandinista! is part of the fun of the record.
For years I really didn't like Ivan Meets G.I. Joe ... but I listened to that track twice yesterday, and it always shows up when I try to edit the LP down to a more managable size.
Gotta give Topper his vocal moment of glory!

"Ivan Meets GI Joe" was my favorite cut off the album when I first bought it. It has since dropped into the second tier of Sandinista! songs, but on an album that has about 5 tiers, that's not so bad.

I love "Ivan Meets GI Joe"....easily one of my favorites from Sandinista!.....Overall, I agree w/ Rocky that it's not top tier, it wouldn't make my Clash's greatest hits cut, but I really enjoy the tune. Well, if I make a 30 song Clash's greatest hits, it would make the cut, but if I only had like 15 songs for a brief overview, it would get cut.
