...also I don't think I could give any of GBV's albums five stars either...Pollard is the filler king. Personally I'd say that Alien Lanes and Bee Thousand are 5-star efforts (and maybe even From a Compound Eye--been listening to that one a lot lately, thanks glen!). But yeah, Pollard is infamous when it comes to the difficulty of wading through the throwaways to find the gold. I think a certain type of Pollard-ite enjoys the filler in same cases, but if you aren't that type of Desciple of Bob, then the filler is sure to stand out a bit too much.

Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is probably a five star album.

But the filler is part of Pollard's genius. But I wouldn't expect any GBV album to be widely recognized as perfect. They're the definition of a cult band, I know that. But those of you who don't hear it are missing out.

Sting was once cool ... really!
But I've gotta admit that he's bored me to tears for the last decade or more. The last time he released something I liked was Ten Sumner's Tales, c. 1993 or so.
I loved The Police back in the eighties, though.

If music is so stagnant, then why isn't Sting doing something to move it forward? Playing 500 year old music isn't going to help music progress. What an ass-bag.

That Sting bit was hilarious. Agreed, it totally made my day. I think we should give Sting the POTD award (kenny deserves some credit for posting it here, but really, the award should go to Sting).

I loved The Police back in the eighties, though. That's exactly how I feel about Sting too. Ten Sumner's Tales had a handful of nice tunes but I didn't like a single thing he did after that album. He should've retired gracefully after that one.

It's Probably Me and Shape of My Heart are both great songs, but Sting just completely lost his touch after that. He has done absolutely nothing worth hearing since then.

"Shape Of My Heart" is definitely my favorite track from TST. "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" is another. As for "It's Probably Me", I like it however I prefered the original single version of that song before he re-recorded it for the album. Or was it the other way around? I'm not sure which came first...
A friend of mine lent me a copy of Mercury Falling when it came out, I listened to it once but couldn't sit through it again. I thought it was a total snoozefest. I didn't bother with anything else after that, and judging by the few singles he put out, I'm pretty sure I'm not missing out on much.

Mercury Falling isn't a total disaster, but it is dull ... and both the live album he recorded on 9/11 and his last studio LP have been downright sleep inducing.
If he'd bounced back after MF, that one would look like a fluke downturn, but instead it seems to have set the tone for the rest of his career. And I loved Sting back in the eighties, and through the middle nineties, so it really hurts to see him wind up in MOR crapland.

It's Probably Me was recorded with Clapton for the Lethal Weapon 3 Sndtrk and yeah, that version is better.

^^^ Yeah, that's the one I'm talking about. The album version is overproduced and too glossy for my tastes. I remember being disappointed the first time I heard it on the album. I was expecting the 'original' version.
