OK ... I'm gonna post a list here, and then immediately follow this up with a different poll. The reason that it's taken me so long to do this is simple: I made it too damn hard. I just can't in all good faith try to line up my favorites across genres and then rank them. It's impossible. So here's my "final" list for this misbegotten topic ... look for a more defined poll coming soon to a message board near you.
1. Miles Davis. No one else in the recording era has captured so much essential music over such a long period of time. Miles rules. 2. The Clash. I love rock and roll so much that the top rockers get the number two vote from me, even though part of me says that this spot should instead go to ... 3. Bob Dylan. When he's bad, he's awful, but when he's been good, he's the best there's ever been at what he does. And what he does is the essence of American music. 4. Duke Ellington. Bad? I don't think Duke ever cut anything bad. Unless by "bad" you mean "awesome." 5. The Beatles. Remade popular music in their own image in less than a decade in the studio. So big they could no longer effectively tour, but the Anthology sets make for excellent reminders of just how well these four guys played together. 6. David Bowie. The greatest individual British rocker. Ever. 7. John Coltrane. 8. Bruce Springsteen (and the E Street Band). 9. The Who. 10. The Velvet Underground. 11. Talking Heads 12. Yo-Yo Ma. 13. B.B. King. 14. Bob Marley (and the Wailers). 15. R.E.M. 16. U2. 17. X. 18. Stevie Wonder. 19. The Replacements. 20. Sleater-Kinney. 21. Midnight Oil. 22. The Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde) 23. Husker Du. 24. The Jam. 25. Susannah Hoffs. (OK, this is a joke, but I'm in love with her right now, so I'm forgiven, right? And I'm using her as a surrogate for the literally thousands of great anonymous girl group hits in rock. Women don't get nearly enough respect in rock, and so I'm gonna use Ms. Hoffs as the surrogate for all of the great unsung women in music. And it's easier than actually picking another artist).
There. That's it. It's just too fucking hard trying to weigh out the relative merits of this disparate band of musicians. They're all awesome, but they're all so different! How can I weigh Stevie Wonder v. Sleater-Kinney v. Yo-Yo Ma -- if you're in the mood for one, the other two won't do, but all three are great!

But I should score the lists anyway. Yes?

After that, PJ Harvey, Rush and The Clash are the only ones that came close. I personally can’t believe The Clash didn’t make it. But oh well. Happy to see Pink Floyd, U2 and Led Zeppelin do so well. Hell, they all 3 beat the VU. Didn’t expect that.
