OK, in the spirit of my previous Greatest American and Greatest British Isles Rock and Roll Bands ... who were/are the Greatest Recording Artists Ever? As usual with my surveys, you get to decide who qualifies as a "recording artist" and what the hell constitutes "greatness." Any genre qualifies, so rock and roll, jazz, classical, country and western, everyone is welcome to play here.
Pick your top 25, and I'll get an independent accounting firm (or at least Melaun/the poster formerly known as Melon) to figure up the definitive list. Tentatively, let's try to get those ballots submitted by Christmas or so, but this'll stay open until we get some kind of critical mass if there aren't enough in the next two or three weeks.

Just to throw a stick in the gears... By recording artist, you're referring to studio work, I assume? So...the artist in question doesn't necessarily have to be a good (or even worthwhile) live act?

Hey, if you think that playing live is irrelevant to one's greatness as a "recording artist" that's up to you. Personally, it'll probably factor in for me, but that's just me.
It's also possible to make the term so broad as to include even composers who lived and died centuries before the invention of sound recording technology. Given the vast amount of his compositions that are still performed in the 21st century, it'd be hard to say that J.S. Bach isn't necessarily a "recording artist" IMHO.

I play by the rules Mr. Holzman. If there are no rules outlined, then I'm liable to go crazy. Are you sure you're ready for a chaotic half-assed list of recording artists.

We may as well just vote for #2-25. We all know that #1 is Nelson.

The way this board has been lately. Rocky and I can't help it that our awesomeness has finally found an audience.
Rocky, scratch Ken's name off the liner notes. He's been feigning allegiance all along.

umm...I kept changing the qualifications throughout that entire list, if that explains why it's so sloppy and sucky.

So this is more like another favourite bands/artist-list? Or should they have a reasonable output to begin with?

...I just went with artist(s) I'm most likely to be listening to at any given moment. I think.

So this is more like another favourite bands/artist-list? Or should they have a reasonable output to begin with? OK, I'm gonna express how I see this list: top performers/artists, regardless of genre. For myself, I don't think I'm gonna include classical composers (unless it's someone who has recorded their own pieces, like Glass or Copeland, though I doubt if either will make my list), but I can see where someone could. So this would be an off-the-cuff list for me: 1. Bob Dylan. 2. Miles Davis. 3. The Clash. 4. The Beatles. 5. John Coltrane. (I really like 'Trane, which is why he's up here for me rather than Armstrong or Ellington, both of whom were more significant). 6. The Who. 7. Yo-Yo Ma. 8. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. 9. Rocky and the Fragtones. 10. Animal. See how that works -- you've got jazz, classical, and rock alongside a Muppet and an internet hoax! ;D This shouldn't be confused with my actual list, which will follow some time this week (at least I expect it will). It's more of a guide. Though I'll be very disappointed at any listing that doesn't include Miles and Dylan. ;D
