Doc have you heard these guys? I've become increasingly addicted since last fall, even though they were big here in town in the late 90's. Really interesting spin on the Hali sound. A lot of tie ins to the Chapel Hill scene from the same era.

Just a couple songs I downloaded, Riley. Keep meaning to check them out more thoroughly though. Any suggestions in terms of complete albums?

So is the Polaris the CanCon equivalent to the Brits' Mercury? Seems more specifically pure indie band focused.

So is the Polaris the CanCon equivalent to the Brits' Mercury? Seems more specifically pure indie band focused. Yeah, designed to fill the same niche as the Mercury Prize. Read something from Carl Wilson a while back where he said he's been party to several serious attempts to establish one of these over the years, so it's been a while coming. In theory it puts every artist making records in Canada on a level field –whether you're Broken Social Scene or The Carlton Showband, the criteria is artistic merit. I think in practice we're obviously going to see it more inclusive of the BSS's of the day, with the kind of regional/linguistic balancing we're used to in this country. Kind of nice to see it off the ground, though. Had this existed ten/twelve years ago, it would have been great to see a band like Cool Blue Halo, for example, getting a little recognition in the mainstream media. Would have made for a nice counter-balance to the likes of Celine Dion or whoever was scooping up Junos year after year at the time. Should accomplish the same thing these days with the BSS/Final Fantasy/Nickelback equation. Right there, that's gotta be worth something!

Yeah well said. There's way too artistic goodness happening up here right now, for these bands to get lost in the shuffle without a little bit of hyped up recognition.

Doc - found a leaked version of The Dears' Gang Of Losers. Needless to say I'll be buying this on release date (August 31 I think?)
Wow! They finally decided to step back off the pretentious pedal and write the pop songs we knew they were always capable of. It doesn't seem like there's a single bad track on the whole thing.
Mucho impressed.

Riley – yeah, feels almost flawless to me right now, too! Cutting out all the extraneous stuff was obviously the way to go.

OK, this board is way too dead lately, so I'm taking the opportunity to be giddy about next weekend. Here's how my schedule is shaping up for Hillside. Saturday, July 29 is going to be one of the greatest days in the history of the world. Friday, July 28 6 p.m. - undecided 7 p.m. - Great Lake Swimmers 8 p.m. - undecided (Corb Lund or The Speakeasies?) 9 p.m. - Kathleen Edwards 10 p.m. - probably The Stills Saturday, July 29 11 a.m. - This Country is Going to the Dogs - Jason Collett with Corb Lund, Amy Millan and Evan Gordon 12 p.m. - Unholy Alliance - The Sadies meet the Constantines 1 p.m. - Hootenanny Revue (Carolyn Mark, Luther Wright, Jenny Whiteley, Oh! Susanna) 2 p.m. - Set Your Controls for the Heart of the Sun - Final Fantasy, The Blow and C'mon 3 p.m. - undecided - probably Jason Collett 4 p.m. - Join the Hidden Cameras (an informal rehearsal with audience participation... hmmmm) 5 p.m. - Amy Millan 6 p.m. - Cuff the Duke 7 p.m. - Holy Fuck 8 p.m. - Final Fantasy And where it gets tricky: 9 - 10 - Lovely Feathers 9:40 - 11 - Sarah Harmer 10 - 11 - Wintersleep Sunday, July 30 Not really much I want to see until: 4 p.m. - C'mon And then there's trouble again: 6:45 - 8 - Hidden Cameras 7 - 8 - The Sadies 8 p.m. - Constantines 9 p.m. - Feist 10 p.m. - a very tired Steve and Kelly hit the road to drive home. All that and the food looks awesome. Even I'm jealous of me right now.

Tunes - you need to see Wintersleep. They're live show is 100% solid. I would never ask anyone to pre-empt Sarah Harmer if I didn't think it was worth it.

OK, I'm taking your word on this one... it's going to be hard for me to miss Sarah Harmer (and I'm quite sure if I do, I'll be the only one of my crew not watching her), so if I'm disappointed I'm never talking to you again.
And to up the ante, tell me this - do I see the Sadies or the Hidden Cameras? I can't decide. Not as much of a problem though, since both are playing at some point on Saturday too.

The Sadies.
The Hidden Cameras are a bit too gay, even for me.

Really? I'm not that familiar with the Hidden Cameras beyond a few songs - I just assumed I would like them. Alright, Sadies it is then. Quite looking forward to seeing them with the Constantines too. Yay.

You may very well like the Hidden Cameras, but I just find them a little too chamberish or something.
