nah. i just figured that we could do 2004 stuff here that excluded albums, or albums as well. whatever people want to do.
my local radio station's top 5 singles of the year list is actually respectable:
1) Green Day - American Idiot 2) Modest Mouse - Float On 3) Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out 4) The Killers - Somebody Told Me 5) U2 - Vertigo
i don't hate the killers' song as much as i used to. i just figured they were a gimmick band that throws a silly line in a song in order to sell albums, like a puddle of mudd ("i love the way you smack my ass") or smile empty soul ("i do it for the drugs"). i might have been wrong. who knows? either way, the second single was good, but i'm not checking out the album anyway.

funny, I almost picked up Under the Radar at the bookstore where I work on lunch today, 'cos I couldn't find a Paste...but instead I just read a decor mag. i'll have to check it out. Anyway, here are my favorite songs from last year, off the top of my head, excluding songs I still think are really great but CANNOT hear again for about 60 years (i.e. 'Take Me Out', 'Float On'...) 1. Unmade Bed – Sonic Youth 2. The Letter – P.J. Harvey 3. Pressure Point – The Zutons 4. All Falls Down – Kanye West 5. Little House of Savages – The Walkmen 6. She Wants to Move – N.E.R.D. 7. How to be Dead – Snow Patrol 8. Staring at the Sun – TV on the Radio 9. Peaceable Kingdom – Patti Smith 10. C’mon, C’mon – The Von Bondies that was pretty easy. these are the songs that have stood the test of time and that I think are really crafty. 'Unmade Bed' may well be my favorite song from last year, but after that it's no certain order really. Why AM i taking this so seriously anyway? and, oh yeah, honorable mention to 'Wishful Thinking', 'Theologians', and 'Hummingbird' by Wilco...

Top (Bottom?) 5 Worst Rock Radio Songs of 2004:
5) The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love
Ow. My ears. I can't believe people willingly compare garbage like this to Queen. That's like comparing a rancid quarter pounder with cheese to a t-bone from a five star restaurant.
4) Seether with Amy Lee - Broken
Seether's just another one of those bands that's halfway to Creed and halfway to Staind. Snore. Give us something NEW, please! With this song in particular, there's nothing redeeming about it at all. The point of music is to elicit some sort of desired emotional response. Someone take this off Snooze. Generic rubbish.
3) Dashboard Confessional - Vindicated
If you love whining, listen up... Dashboard's back! I still can't believe that one of the guys from Sunny Day Real Estate, a pretty cool band that actually makes 'emo' a listenable form of rock (I know that sounds impossible... take my word for it), toured with these guys. ... Wait, isn't Dashboard one guy? I guess the lack of quality would be too much for more than one 'artist' to handle.
2) Good Charlotte - Predictable
The only thing predictable about this song is that it sucked, and I want my three minutes back. Actually, I never agreed to give it. Stupid radio. This is even worse than "The Anthem", and I'm not kidding. Plus, at parts, the singer seems to be hinting that he'd rather be a rapper. Let them have him. Though I'm sure they'd eat him alive.
AND NOW, THE WORST RADIO SONG OF 2004:
1) Bowling For Soup - 1985
Oh God, this is it. First of all, it's one of those half-assed pop-punk singles, in the style of Good Charlotte or Blink 182. The singer is just as bad, believe me. Second of all, this is a cover of another group of the subpar subgenre, SR-71. Third of all, the lyrics make absolutely no sense, and it gets off by trying to sound like it has some sort of 'deep message' that nobody else understands. Something about there being Springsteen, U2, and Madonna before Nirvana hit the airwaves, and Nirvana apparently made it so that you can't listen to the first three anymore. First of all, I hear U2 on the radio more than I hear Nirvana. Secondly, those three still make music to this day, and some argue that U2's new album is one of their best. Thirdly, since when was Bruce Springsteen ever actually on the radio? Fourthly, this pop-punk style is the reason why modern rock radio has been filth for the last couple years, so they have no right to complain. Fifthly, this song just goes to show you how people rely on MTV for music when they can easily look elsewhere for it, and they simply bash 'modern music' in every other musical conversation. Sixthly (that doesn't sound like a real word), the only supposedly 'modern' band they mention (I guess U2, Springsteen, and Madonna don't make music anymore, according to him?) is Limp Bizkit, who barely can sell anything anymore. They don't bash recent impressive bands, such as Modest Mouse (though they've been making music for a few years, actually... they just recently had mainstream success. The song talks about music from a mainstream standpoint, though), Franz Ferdinand, or as some would argue, The Killers. Some would argue that this song is just for fun, and isn't meant to be some sort of serious editorial. I argue that it offends my ears and my sanity and I want my dignity back. It hits you with the whammy of being like a Good Charlotte song stylistically, and like an editorial by some guy who got his head sewed up because half of his brain was shot out, messagewise.
Ah, that felt good.
